China's Great Emperors

China's Great Emperors" is a six-session lecture series that will explore the history of imperial China through the lives of some of its most fascinating emperors. Each lecture features a prominent scholar covering an emperor and his dynasty, from the "first" emperor Qin Shi Huangdi to the Mongol rule of Khubilai Khan to the late-imperial glories of Emperor Qianlong. Join China Institute in exploring more than 2000 years of imperial rule over the Middle Kingdom.

Founded in early 19th century China, Bagua Zhang is one of three branches of martial arts in the Wudang school. Join us as we welcome a martial arts delegation from China headed by Master Wang Hanzhi, a 5th generation master in the Imperial Bagua Zhang style, for a lecture and presentation on this classic form of martial arts. U.S. Supreme Court's Tie Vote Affirms Lower Court Decision in Favor of CTA!
In a 4-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a judgment March 29 affirming the lower court ruling in favor of CTA in the Friedrichs v. CTA lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of fair share fees. The loss of fair share would have hurt working families by silencing the collective voice of faculty and other union members. In a media statement, NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia said, "The U.S. Supreme Court today rejected a political ploy to silence public employees like teachers, school bus drivers, cafeteria workers, higher education faculty and other educators to work together to shape their profession."
Board of Governors Votes to Replace ACCJ
The California Community Colleges Board of Governors will seek a new accreditor to replace the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), which has come under fire from faculty organizations throughout the state. During the transition period – anticipated to take a few years – the board expects the ACCJC to make improvements in its current process. "We have moved from fear and intimidation to empowerment. This is a testament to democracy, where all segments of the community college system worked together to bring about change, change which will above all benefit our students," said CCA President Lynette Nyaggah.

A coalition made up of education, labor, health care and community groups is now collecting signatures for the Children''s Education and Health Care Protection Act and you can help! The initiative provides a temporary extension of the income tax rates on the wealthiest Californians approved by voters in Prop. 30. It''s urgent we qualify the ballot initiative. Deadline for collecting signatures is April 15.
Factfinder Rules in Favor of a 5 Percent Salary Increase for CSU Faculty
Ruling in favor of the California Faculty Association, an independent fact-finding report concluded that the California State University should offer its teaching staff a 5 percent raise. With the CSU administration refusing to budge, the 26,000-member CFA is continuing its plans for a five-day strike April 13-15 and April 18-19.
