Party General Secretary and Commander-in-Chief Xi Jinping has just unveiled a far-reaching restructuring of the People's Liberation Army that, if fully implemented over the next 5 years, promises a far-reaching transformation in how this powerful institution is organized, led, and operates. Will Xi be able to fully implement these reforms and what will this mean for civil-military relations, national security decision-making, and the PLA's war-fighting effectiveness? Two veteran observers of the PLA and its political influence are contributors to a newly published volume PLA Influence on China's National Security Policymaking (Stanford University Press, 2015). Drawing upon their contributions to this book, they offer their insights on these latest developments.
Speaker Andrew Scobell is a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation. Prior to this he was an associate professor of international affairs at the George H. W. Bush School of Government and Public Service (with tenure) and director of the China certificate program at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. From 1999 until 2007, he was associate research professor in the Strategic Studies Institute at the U.S. Army War College and adjunct professor of political science at Dickinson College, both located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Scobell is author of China's Use of Military Force: Beyond the Great Wall and the Long March (Cambridge University Press, 2003), China's Search for Security (Columbia University Press, 2012) with Andrew J. Nathan. His latest edited volume is PLA Influence on China's National Security Policymaking (Stanford University Press, 2015) with Phillip C. Saunders. Scobell was born and raised in Hong Kong and regularly makes research trips to the region. He earned a doctorate in political science from Columbia University.

In this romantic film, the demure but strong-willed woman Wen'er, who is from a literati family, is married to the brutish son of a wealthy family. After he essentially deserts her, Wan'er connects with his brother-in-law, an idealist poet and outspoken advocate against Japanese aggression. The film delivers a fascinating glimpse of what life was like for an upper class woman living in Tianjian during the 1930s and how China transitioned from a traditional feudal society to modernity. One of the master poets, painters and musicians of the High Tang Period, Wang Wei (701-761) is acclaimed in poetry in particular for his refreshing and exquisite depiction of a harmonious, sometimes idealized, union between Man and Nature and emptiness/ nothingness that is the essence of Buddhism. At this lecture, Mr. Ben Wang will discuss the representative poems by Wang Wei.

我将东方元素融入到这个西方奇幻世界中， 希望将东西方文化完美的结合并展现在世人面前。我的心愿是：我的梦想不仅是我个人的，它也可以成为在美华裔青少年的动力和助力。在困难面前毫不退缩积极应对。如果我的故事可以帮助他人早日找到人生的方向和目标， 这便是我最大的成功。

Detrimental Effects of Blue Light from Electronics on Sleep

Light isn't just for vision. In addition to enabling us to see, light is the major synchronizer of our bodies' circadian rhythms to the local time on earth. Light can also induce an acute alerting effect on people. Lighting characteristics affecting vision are different than those affecting our biological rhythms and our acute alertness. Different types and levels of light can affect a person's ability to see clearly, identify people and objects, and drive safely. Certain types of light applied at certain times of the day can increase sleep efficiency of older adults and reduce symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, felt by many people during winter months. If applied at the wrong time, light can lead to circadian rhythm disruption, which has been linked to increased risk for diseases and disorders. How and when lighting can be used to promote health and well-being of those suffering from circadian disorders will also be discussed.
