打破職場瓶頸的研討會: 如何與人交談 - 11月22日

Book Talk: Ben Wang on Eileen Chang's Naked Earth
One of the greatest and most loved of modern Chinese writers, Eileen Chang (张爱玲) illuminates the dark corners of the human existence with a style of disorienting beauty. Her late work Naked Earth (赤地之戀), originally commissioned as anti-Communist propaganda by the United States Information Service, is the story of two earnest young people confronting the grim realities of revolutionary change in the early years of Mao's China. Unavailable in English for more than fifty years, it is a harrowing tale of perverted ideals, damaged souls, deepest loneliness, and terror. At this event celebrating Naked Earth's publication by New York Review Books (the first time it has been published outside of Hong Kong), China Institute Senior Lecturer Ben Wang will speak about Chang's life, the unusual circumstances surrounding Naked Earth's writing, and the timeless precision of Chang's prose. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Pipa: Queen of the Traditional - Chinese Musical Instruments
Ms. Ma Lin, is rated as one of the "ten top pipa players in China" by CCTV, having performed at many national and international concerts. She will discuss the history of pipa, techniques of pipa playing and the new role assumed by pipa in contemporary music.
Ms. Ma will also play for the audience her representative works.

“The Influence Secrets of Pack Leadership”
When two or more people get together they form what scientists call a pack. Effective pack leaders can accomplish miracles through unique influence tactics. Consequently these influence tactics are needed not only by corporate managers and entrepreneurs, but by parents, teachers, professionals, coaches, volunteers, politicians, salespeople and ad hoc leaders in emergency situations. They are also essential for succeeding at job interviews, starting a business, buying or selling a house, finding a mate and succeeding in marriage. In one hour you will learn the 8 essential influence tactics with examples of application. Dr. Bill Cohen is a retired Air Force general and you can “Google” him as “Major General William A. Cohen.” He graduated from West Point and has an MBA from the University of Chicago and an MA in Management and PhD in Executive Management from the Peter Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University. In 2009 he received an award as a distinguished alumnus from that institution. He’s a distinguished graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, DC in residence. His more than 50 books on business and Management, including A Class with Drucker, Drucker on Marketing, Drucker on Leadership, and his latest book, The Practical Drucker, have been published in 23 languages.

The graduate group in Applied Math and Computational Science (AMCS) at Penn is looking for talented, ambitious students interested in the development and application of sophisticated mathematics and computational tools for problems of real world interest. Our highly interdisciplinary program draws its faculty from 10 departments at Penn and provides students with the opportunity to do mathematical research in a wide range of application fields, from materials science to image analysis, machine learning to population genetics, and beyond.
