Dear Friends To call the festivities Lunar New Year is a more accurate from an astronomical/astrological point and does not convey the meaning that Chinese are now being excluded or somehow offended, it means that other cultures, who also recognise the tradition, are now included. It makes no real practical difference in the way that Chinese or other cultural groups celebrate the occasion by simply referring to the festivities as the Lunar New Year. Perhaps, insofar as the naming issue goes the term Lunar could be the generic title and if any particular cultural group wants to have an exclusive celebration they could title their festivities, for example; Chinese Lunar New Year or Vietnamese (TET) Lunar New Year. However once the festivities are in the public domain it is necessary for those festivities to be referred to as Lunar New Year. This is an accurate title and vital to the objects of multiculturalism in Australia. It should not be a case of whoever funds the occasion should get the naming rights, this outcome would be detrimental to fostering harmonious multicultural relations and hints of a vested interest.” |

Dear Friends Happy Chinese New Year and best wishes all. On the subject of "Chinese New Year", many of you had rightly voiced your disapproval with Sydney City Council last year that Sydney's Chinese New Year festivities should in future be re-badged as the Lunar New Year. While we respect the rights of other communities to brand their new year in whatever terms of their preferences, I trust we will all continue to fight vociferously and remind Sydney City Council that our community does not want Chinese New Year to be known as anything else. Sydney has celebrated Chinese New Year for over 150 years and we are entitled to continue to celebrate Chinese New Year as we've always known it, in the years to come. Other communities are entitled naturally to brand their own new year celebrations under whatever descriptions they wish to. It is a timely reminder that Chinese New Year is an internationally accepted description of our new year. This is the case in so many different parts of the world where people of Chinese ancestry are found. Long live Chinese New Year. |
