The Last Giant in Chinese Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting | January 10, 2015 Well cognizant of the inevitability of pain in life, which leads to a melancholy resignation to the all-too-quick passing of life's golden, halcyon days, Pu Ru, whose great-grandfather was Emperor Daoguang, the 6th emperor of the Manchu dynasty, lived through the twilight years of the Qing. This last giant in poetry, calligraphy and painting, a bon-vivant who luxuriated in a privileged early life, eventually settled quietly down to a threadbare existence on the island of Taiwan after 1949. Throughout the tumultuous changes, he persisted in his literary and artistic creations indefatigably and transformed what to others would be unendurable despair into works of lasting beauty. Ben Wang, co-chair of the Renwen Society, will discuss the accomplishments of Pu Ru in Chinese poetry, calligraphy and painting. Date: Saturday, January 10, 2015 Time: 2:00-4:00 pm For videos of selected Renwen lectures, please contact: renwen@chinainstitute.org |

CLASSES START THE WEEK OF JANUARY 12, 2015. Register now to save your spot! Classes start the week of January 12, 2015, with NEW language courses added to the adult Group Classes. China Institute offers a wide range of Chinese language classes for students at every proficiency level and with different expectations or goals. Chinese for Heritage Learners (Intermediate) has recently been added to our course offerings in Winter 2015. This course is designed specifically for heritage Chinese students who possess speaking skills, but limited reading and writing skills in Chinese. It introduces functional vocabulary and sentence patterns and phrases, and provides a systemic review of grammar through reading texts on various cultural related topics. Reading Chinese Media Texts (Newspaper and Internet) Is there a "Different Chinese"? This unique course is designed for high-intermediate to advanced level students to efficiently strengthen their reading skills and comprehension ability. Through a carefully selected array of texts from current newspapers and internet journals, students are expected to acquire a keen insight into features of the dramatic changes in Chinese society while gaining an intimate, yet amusing, comprehension of the linguistic codes and jargon of the modern Chinese language. Such a language reflects multiple aspects of social and cultural life in China in an era of fast transition. Students will develop a vocabulary very different from what a college textbook would present, and taste a kind of Chinese language that vividly denotes the feeling of the people currently living in that country. Lunch-Hour Conversation (High Beginner) This elementary conversational course provides optimal opportunities for students to acquire better speaking skills in Chinese with the emphasis on natural, colloquial usage of the language. It is designed for students who have completed up to Level 2 in our Chinese classes or at an equivalent proficiency level. Listening comprehension training is also emphasized in order to enhance a student's overall communicative ability. We look forward to seeing you this semester!
