Global Religious Changes and Social Life in China and Taiwan - Talk by Robert Weller, Boston University

This talk discusses four of the most important global trends in religion as they have affected Taiwan and China's Jiangsu Province: the removal of religion from politics (secularization), the attempt to confine it to a purely religious sphere (religionization), the increased interest in textual authority and religious self-consciousness (rationalization), and an increase in the direct physical manifestations of belief through unmediated physical experience (embodiment). A comparison of the two cases shows the importance of global trends and local culture over the century-long political divergence that separates them. It also helps explain the different trajectories of Buddhism, temple religion, and Christianity in the two places, and the potentials of those religions to contribute to civil life.

Webster University, an American university with locations in Europe, Asia, and Africa, is actively addressing the challenge of preparing graduates for the global workforce. In this webinar, Dr. Peter Maher and Dr. Benjamin Akande will provide an overview of the university’s initiative to incorporate global education across all business-related disciplines as well as the process being established to achieve this goal. They will discuss the incorporation of Tk20 to communicate details of curriculum mapping and assessment management to worldwide faculty, and to gather and report the assessment data needed for continuous improvement. Initial benefits of curricula enhancements based on this framework will be discussed. The webinar will conclude with a time of Q&A.

TAIWAN ACADEMY OUTPOST OPENS IN LA
The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles will open its doors to the general public by offering a film screening series starting Oct. 3, and hosting a black-and-white photography exhibition that will run through Jan. 2, 2015.
ART BANK COLLECTION IN TOKYO
A total of 22 unique artworks by 19 Taiwanese artists has been shipped to Japan for the Art Bank’s first-ever overseas display. The exhibition titled "Silent Time" will run through Sept. 15, 2015 at the Taipei representative office in Tokyo.
U-THEATRE ON NORTH AMERICA TOUR
Taiwan’s U-Theatre, a respected percussion group known for incorporating elements of Zen philosophy and Chinese theology with majestic drumming performances, will embark on a tour of North America starting Oct. 2.
