About the Speakers:
Jia Qingguo，Dean of the Peking University School of International Studies。 Professor Jia received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1988. He is member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Committee, a member of the Standing Committee of the China Democratic League and a guest supervisor of the Ministry of Supervision. He is a member of the Academic Degree Review Board of the State Council of China, Vice President of the China Association for Asia-Pacific Studies, and a board member of the China Association of American Studies and the National Taiwan Studies Association. He is also a member of the editorial board of several international academic journals. He has published extensively on U.S.-China relations, relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, Chinese foreign policy and Chinese politics.
Ernest J. Wilson III，Dean, USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism，Professor Wilson holds the Walter Annenberg Chair in Communication. He's a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as a board member of the Pacific Council on International Policy and of National Academies' Computer Science and Telecommunications Committee. He was a member of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Board from 2000 to 2010, chairing it 2009-2010. Focusing on the intersection between communication and public policy, Wilson has consulted for the World Bank and United Nations. Wilson also served on the White House National Security Council and as policy and planning director at the U.S. Information Agency. He has published widely on topics including governing global electronic networks and the politics of internet diffusion. He advised on President Barack Obama's transition team on matters of communication technology and public diplomacy.
Ren Sun，UCLA Associate Vice Chancellor for Internationalization，Dr. Sun wears many hats at UCLA. He has been a professor of molecular and medical pharmacology since 1998. His research team works on tumor-associated viruses and he is a member of interdisciplinary research teams at the California NanoSystem Institute, the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Molecular Biology Institute, the Dental Research Institute, and the AIDS Institute. He is Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the David Geffen School of Medicine. He is the driving force behind several UCLA and Zhejiang University collaborations.

Sailing from China: Recentering World Trade in the Seventeenth Century
Lecture by Timothy Brook, University of British Columbia, with Discussant Perry Anderson, UCLA

Despite the trend to recast early-modern history in global terms, the formation of global trading networks in the 16th and 17th centuries continues largely to be told in terms of European agency and, at best, Asian receptivity. This tendency is an effect of the historical sources used to construct this history. A Chinese source from the early 17th century, a recently re-accessed maritime chart known as the Selden map, allows us to reconstruct maritime trade in East Asia as essentially a Chinese phenomenon. How should this perspective alter our understanding of the political economy of trade in the early-modern world?
Since 2004, Tim Brook has taught Chinese and world history at the University of British Columbia, where he holds the Republic of China Chair at the Institute of Asian Research. His research covers the social and cultural history of imperial China since the fourteenth century, as well as aspects of China’s experience in the twentieth century. Recent books include Vermeer’s Hat and Mr Selden’s Map of China. He is currently a fellow at the Gety Research Institute.
Perry R. Anderson is a historian and political essayist. A specialist in intellectual history, he is often identified with the post-1956 Western Marxism of the New Left. He is Professor of History and Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a former editor of the New Left Review. Anderson has written several books, the latest being The Indian Ideology (2012), a polemic against the Indian nation-building project. |

You are cordially invited to a telescopic viewing of the planet Mars on Thursday, April 24, for the college and the community of Barstow. The viewing begins at 8 p.m. at the Astronomical Observatory located off Veterans Parkway, across from the Veterans Home of Barstow. Parking is available on Veterans Parkway. You may come at any time but the viewing ends around 9:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
Known as the red planet due to its reddish-orange color, this particular viewing will be exceptional as this is the closest approach and hence the brightest Mars has been to Earth since 2007. Features that may be noticeable through BCC’s observatory telescope, a 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector, include the north polar ice cap which is a mixture of carbon dioxide (also known as dry ice) and water ice, and surface markings that denote areas of volcanic rocks and ancient cratered terrain.
All participants will be able to see through the telescope, weather permitting (i.e., a clear sky without any clouds or precipitation). This is a standing event and a light jacket is recommended. I will be conducting a narration during the viewing and students from my Observational Astronomy class will also be on hand to answer questions and point out other interesting celestial objects.
