「美新周刊」25日公布最新的全球大學排名，結果哈佛第一，史丹福第三；但是哈佛領先的時間可能不會很長，估計很快就會被史丹福追過。為什麼會有這樣的估計？ 美新是做「全美大學排名」的權威，三年前開始做「全球大學排名」，但奇怪的是，美新這兩項排名會出現自相矛盾的情況，例如今年的「全美」第一名是普林斯頓大學，但「全球」第一名卻是哈佛。為什麼會有這樣的矛盾？
原來全球排名中，有一項很特別的評分準則：「聲譽」。例如哈佛的全球聲譽，高居第一，史丹福只是第四；這個準則在美新的全美排名中是沒有的。「聲譽」對柏克萊加大的排名，影響更大。柏克萊在美新的全美排名只是20，但全球排名卻高升至第四，反映出柏克萊的招牌在全球有多響亮。
中國人對柏克萊也特別有好感，所以在中國做人的全球大學排名中能夠突圍而出。上海交大所做的2016-17年的全球大學排名，柏克萊就高居第三。柏克萊是公校，資源難與擁有數百億元校產的私校哈佛和史丹福特相比。奇就奇在這裡，在美新的全球排名中，竟有五所加大分校進入前24名，包括：柏克萊第4、洛杉磯加大第10，聖地牙哥加大15，舊金山加大16，聖他芭芭拉加大第24。為什麼會如此？因為這些學校的聲譽都很高，例如柏克萊全球聲譽排第5，洛杉磯加大全球聲譽第8。
加州總共有七所大學進入前24名，除了五所加大，還有史丹福和加州理工；全球前24名大學中，差不多三分一都在加州，可見加州文化極受全球歡迎。加州的學校為什麼受歡迎？因為加州代表了21世紀的科技文化。美新的全球大學的前兩名，是新英格蘭的哈佛和麻省理工；第三和第四則是與矽谷有關的史丹福和柏克萊。新英格蘭是美國文化發源地區，而矽谷則是21 世紀科技文化的新興地區。文化西移和科技革命，是導致史丹福和柏克萊崛起的原因。20年前，很難想像史丹福和柏克萊會被選為全球最佳大學的前五名，更難想像五所加大分校可以進入全球最佳大學的前24名。現在卻可以，是因為21世紀的資訊革命，而史丹福、柏克萊、加州理工和其他加大分校都代表了21世紀的加州科技。
去年「普林斯頓評論」做了一項極有象徵意義的「夢想大學」排名；結果，以畢業生創業而著名的史丹福鰲頭獨占，擊敗哈佛，成為家長和學生心目中的夢想大學第一名。21世紀的科技潮流正方興未艾，聲譽最佳的哈佛，重視全面發展，兼顧人文與科技，但論到電腦科學和創業課程，卻比史丹福稍遜一籌。這是為什麼估計，不久之後史丹福的全球排名，將會超越哈佛的原因。 |

菲律賓為何敢打美國臉？
菲律賓總統杜特蒂「遠美親中」，給即將卸任的歐巴馬總統，以及他的「亞太再平衡」戰略，狠甩重重耳光。菲律賓這張骨牌倒了，美國須防越南、泰國、馬來西亞、緬甸等跟進，徹底葬送華府在亞洲的外交努力。杜特蒂為甚麼敢打美國和歐巴馬的臉？他個人自小目睹美國殖民菲律賓，凌虐屠殺的惡劣記憶，美國拒發他簽證的舊怨，華府駐菲大使和歐巴馬、國務院譴責他法外掃毒的新仇，加上菲律賓需要錢、需要繁榮，美國無法提供援助，綜合結果就是現在美中菲三邊關係。
杜特蒂說，美國沒錢了，中國有錢。有實例為證：美國每年提供菲律賓軍事援助，每年僅5000萬美元，2015年提高到7900萬美元。美菲聯合演習，菲軍可使用美國武器，但演習結束就收回。美國窮了還有實例，喜萊莉任國務卿時第一次訪緬甸，僅提供120萬美元援助，指定用於社會改革，緬甸舉國上下本來期待數十億美元，兩者落差太大。但看中國，習近平、李克強出訪，動輒簽數十億美元經援、投資或貸款給周邊「小朋友」。中國近、美國遠；中國富、美國窮，先天上美國已吃大虧。但華府還要人家當馬前卒，要人家瘦著肚皮，配合美國牽制有如富豪的中國。結果得罪中國，拿不到投資和援助，誰會篤信維護民主自由等價值，跟著美日跑？
所以杜特蒂個人信念、現實利害，公與私、舊怨加新仇，造就今天美國的不堪局面。歐巴馬八年努力，號稱「太平洋總統」，如今「亞太再平衡」反倒像建在沙灘上的大廈，菲律賓抽掉第一根地基，東亞國家如跟進，美國的亞太政策可能全盤傾覆，讓中國坐收漁利。有人形容菲律賓在「賣身」。但小國依附大國，從自身利益出發很正常。菲律賓只有地緣戰略位置值錢，它的海空軍基地是美國在南海不能少的依靠，美菲聯合巡弋南海，只是假象。菲律賓海軍有120艘近海巡邏艇，兩艘像樣的二手老爺軍艦；空軍沒有戰鬥機，連海巡船都靠日本贈送。嚴格說，除了靠美軍，菲國只有陸戰隊稍像樣，沒有現代化戰力。
杜特蒂這回「反利用」美國當槓桿，向中國討糖吃，想從中國獲取貸款、投資、貿易、觀光，繁榮經濟，鞏固連任。軍事和外交上，菲律賓想拋棄美國，很難想像。即使杜某想向中國投懷送抱，但北京謹慎應對，怕賠了夫人又折兵，他日讓國際訕笑。菲國軍方高級將領，多數是美國西點軍校畢業，親美意識根深柢固；菲國地方勢力被數十個家族壟斷，親美力量也強大，兩者隨時可讓杜特蒂「翻船」。美國將如何「收拾」杜特蒂，國際間等著看。杜某揚言CIA要暗殺他，是打預防針。華府如不能有效制約馬尼拉，將威望掃地。有人提及軍事政變、顏色革命，但等待杜特蒂四年任期屆滿，反而是較可行的選項。柯林頓如上台，增加了一個爛攤子，等著她收拾。

美國被耍？中國被戲？
菲律賓總統杜特蒂最近親中反美言論，口氣之重，史上罕見，博得媒體大量版面，但中、美官方私下很清楚，這不過是一個「政治過動兒」發洩的語言，過激回應反而助漲其聲勢，所以謹慎以對。美國有太多「對付」這些領袖的方法，有人形容就算杜特蒂變成孫悟空，也逃不出如來佛的手掌。國際政治現實，小國要掙脫大國控制不簡單，而想在兩大國中漁利，更常是人財兩空。美國殖民、「改造」菲律賓多年，從一個受西班牙和伊斯蘭影響，改成美式政治及文化的國度，政、經、軍利益相連，不可能短時間就徹底翻轉。
中國官方謹慎，更基於前任總統艾奎諾三世，到北京討到大量經援，卻在南海問題上，對著中國幹，倒向美國。菲律賓號稱民主國家，但政治和經濟卻是160個家族控制，權力盤根錯結，利益犬牙交錯，政治腐敗，貪污橫行，經濟不振。50年前冷戰時，被美國拿來做為亞洲民主櫥窗，但實則是法治和效率不彰國家。
當年馬可仕家族打著社會改革旗幟，像今天杜特蒂一樣上台，而且獲得菲律賓政治史上少有的總統連任，但擺不平各家族的利益，加上自身也貪腐，陷入群起反對，遂用專制獨裁手段維繫權力，最後眾判親離，出走夏威夷。馬可仕在二戰日本佔領菲律賓時，組織游擊隊，站在美國這邊，上任後更大力拉攏菲美關係，自以為可在國內權力鬥爭中勝出，更在美國希望他下台時，喊出要倒向蘇聯的大話，被美國徹底放棄。
杜特蒂上任蜜月期，說些民粹、不得體的話，民眾和美國或許還能包容，這不是菲律賓特色，也是社交媒體發達後的共同現象。美國共和黨總統候選人川普的言論，也獲黨的提名。值得觀察的是，杜特蒂雖然言論辛辣，但在政壇打滾多年，自己本身又是稱霸菲南多年的大家族，也帶了許多親信上任，未來也可能像歷任總統，難脫利益糾葛的歷史宿命，更難逃政治對手的撻伐。目前他在反毒上雖小有成就，但已被西方及國內的違反人權攻擊，恐難持續。未來在其它政務推動中，遭到既得利益的杯葛，也可想而知。
從兩件事可以看出其實他是懂得妥協的政客，一是像許多過去總統一樣，給前任犯罪總統特赦，之前他已同意給予陷入牢獄的前總統艾若育同樣待遇。二是馬可仕家屬一直要求他能歸葬菲國軍人英雄公墓，遭到強烈反對，但杜特蒂卻同意安葬，他的理由是馬可仕雖不是英雄，卻是軍人。杜特蒂的個性讓他一直說些狠話，但不代表他不會妥協，他親中棄美言論會耍了誰？美國？中國？ |

Seminar - Aspirations and Illusions: A Trompe L'oeil Collage tradition in Chinese Painting

A radically new genre of painting appeared in China during the mid-nineteenth century and then disappeared, forgotten in the dust heaps of history. Artists – calling their paintings bapo, Eight Brokens -- depicted scattered, deteriorating papers, usually of artistic and scholarly importance, arranged in a collage-like appearance. Torn, worm-eaten calligraphies, paintings, printed pages lay alongside quotidian ephemera, such as advertisements and postmarked envelopes. Now, in the twenty-first century, the time is ripe to explore and recognize the ingenuity, creativity, aesthetics, humor, and literati expressions of these unique paintings. Talk by Nancy Berliner, Wu Tung Curator of Chinese Art at the Museum of Fine Arts
Within the Forbidden City, the Qianlong Garden with its 26 buildings and pavilions, designed inside and out by the emperor is a thrilling manifestation of an emperor's visual imagination. One of the world's greatest art connoisseurs, the 18th century Qianlong Emperor, collected a myriad of ancient masterpieces, but also relished his privileged opportunity to work with the finest artists and artisans to design and create all manner of inspired objects. With a deep knowledge of Chinese artistic traditions and a hungry interest in European aesthetics and styles, he and his workers produced extraordinary porcelains, trompe-l'oeil murals and fantastical garden estates, the likes of which had never before been seen in China.
Nancy Berliner, PhD., a historian of Chinese art and architecture, is the Wu Tung Curator of Chinese Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her most recent exhibition is “Court Ladies or Pin-Up Girls? Chinese Painting from the Museum of Fine Arts.” Until 2012, she was the Curator of Chinese Art at the Peabody Essex Museum and curator of Yin Yu Tang, a 200-year old rural Chinese house now at the Peabody Essex Museum. She also serves as an interpretive and curatorial advisor to the World Monuments Fund on the Qianlong Garden, Forbidden City, conservation project in Beijing. She is the author of Chinese Folk Art: The Small Skills of Carving Insects; Friends of the House, Furniture of China’s Towns and Villages; Beyond the Screen, Chinese Furniture of the 16th and 17th Centuries; Yin Yu Tang, the Daily Life and Architecture of a Chinese House, which was selected as a Notable Book of 2003 by the New York Times Book Review Section; co-author with Edward Cooke of Inspired by China: Contemporary Furnituremakers Explore Chinese Traditions, and editor of Juanqinzhai in the Qianlong Garden.

Literature of the Six Dynasties Period
A Ben Wang Lecture Series

In conjunction with Art in a Time of Chaos, the grand exhibition of cultural relics from the Six Dynasties Period at China Institute, Ben Wang, Senior Lecturer of Language and Humanity of the Institute, offers a special course on literature of the Six Dynasties Period. Lives and works by representative poets of the period as well as the quintessential spirit of famed texts A New Account of Tales of the World and Zhaoming's Collection of Literary Works will be discussed in this three-session series.
The Six Dynasties Period (220-589) marks as one of the most significant and influential periods in the history of Chinese literature, namely poetry, in that pentasyllabic and heptasyllabic quatrains emerged. These new poetic styles would flourish and dominate the poetic scene in the later Tang Dynasty (618-907). Another unique linguistic happening of this period was the start of the formal tonal system (the four tones) of the Chinese language, which led to an ideal musicality in poetry.
One of the two most important collections of literature from the period is Zhaoming's Collection of Literary Works by Crown Prince Zhaoming (501-531) of the Liang Dynasty (502-557), the first and a stupendous collection of literary and poetic works published before the untimely death of the young prince. The other is A New Account of Tales of the World, an amusing book, the first of its kind, on the romantic anecdotes and sayings of the witty men of letters of the time, which was compiled and edited by Liu Yiqing (403-444) of the Song Dynasty (420-581) of the Six Dynasties. This lecture will be conducted in English. No previous knowledge of the Chinese language is required.

Many real systems can be modeled as networks, where the elements of the system are nodes and interactions between elements are edges. An even larger set of systems can be modeled using dynamical processes on networks, which are in turn affected by the dynamics. Networks thus represent the backbone of many complex systems, and their theoretical and computational analysis makes it possible to gain insights into numerous applications. Networks permeate almost every conceivable discipline---including sociology, transportation, economics and finance, biology, and myriad others---and the study of "network science" has thus become a crucial component of modern scientific education.
The school "Complex Networks: Theory, Methods, and Applications" offers a succinct education in network science. It is open to all aspiring scholars in any area of science or engineering who wish to study networks of any kind (whether theoretical or applied), and it is especially addressed to doctoral students and young postdoctoral scholars. The aim of the school is to deepen into both theoretical developments and applications in targeted fields.

很多人恨川普，中国人 & 美国人，我想问你们一句：除了给你们带来笑声，川普曾经伤害过你吗？
川普从来没有实权，他只是个一个普通的商人，一个脱口秀嘉宾，他跟你没有见过面，也没有制定什么政策来管辖你，没有收过你的税，也没有贪过你的钱。他的节目和段子让你开心让你笑，那么，为什么竞选开始后，很多人开始恨他了？
大家恨川普骂川普，因为希拉里团队和主流媒体把他描述成一个种族主义者，一个不尊重女性的人，一个欺负穷人的富人，一个逃税的商人。于是你想象你或你的朋友家人是他不尊重的对象，你的税替他交，你的族性被他鄙视，但实际上，这些都是子虚乌有的事情。如果你还相信美国的主流媒体，那么你还要过几年才能有成熟的见解。
相反，希拉里是真正害我们的人。她被主流媒体包装成了一名成功的圣母，表面上是个慈母，在乎你的感受，在乎你的肤色，在乎你的工作和收入，在乎你家里的女人和小孩。但是，他跟沙特私下有勾当，收了沙特5600万美金，这个沙特是最不尊重女性的国家，他们的贵族从战地购买性奴，也是911事件的幕后支持者。希拉里制定AA法案让你的小孩进不了好的州立大学，她支持的Obamacare用你的钱给懒人买保险，她的厕所法案让你们的女儿和男人进一个洗手间。。。。但你还打算选她当总统，这需要多大的信任呢？
这次美国大选让我们看到美国这个国家的很多问题，也看到了人性的懦弱，邪恶，贪婪，冷漠，无正义感，但也看到了很多人勇敢地站出来，和希拉里代表的华尔街财团和国家机器抗争。在这个过程中，我们很多的朋友已经去世了，媒体说他们是正常死亡，但我们不得不保留我们的怀疑。除了阿桑奇的律师非正常死亡，维基解密创始人Gavin Macfadyen的近日突然死亡（有的媒体说是癌症），最近克林顿基金会的钱负责人Eric Braverman也感受到死亡危险，正式向俄罗斯申请政治避难。加上之前跟邮件门相关的Seth， Joe，Shawn， Victor都在大选过程中相继死亡，想想也真是可怕。
希拉里不是第一次从政，她的政治才能和路线我们其实大概都清楚，她坚持奥巴马里的厕所法案和开放的婚姻政策，就是奥巴马的加强版，继续用Obamacare来加重中产阶级的负担。她要求控枪，实际上是控我们守法民众的枪，黑市的枪她控不了，坏蛋的枪她也没法控制。她要求无理由地最大化接收叙利亚难民，其实能来美国的难民都是有点背景和经济基础的，没钱没背景顶多跑到土耳其，她并不能帮助真正需要帮助的人，也没有决心打击ISIS，不能从根本上解决难民的根源问题。
希拉里的贪污问题已经不是秘密，克林顿基金从全球各地吸金，甚至从她之前骂为腐败政府的摩洛哥收了1200万美金。她没有道德标准毫无底线，收钱办事，公报私囊。希拉里作为华尔街的代言人，继续保护索罗斯，巴菲特们的利益，而中产阶级则是她版图里的纳税大户和摇钱树，我们每天辛苦工作，交了各种杂税之后，所剩无几，积蓄还赶不上人家发展中国家的人们。
而川普，只是个有点理想的美国老头，他并没有伤害过我们一点点。他的出现是美国内部问题爆发的表征。这么多年来，美国政府告诉美国人民什么是政治正确，他们试图重新教导我们什么是“正确”的事情：
“你不能跟客人说Merry Christmas，而要说Happy New Year。”
“你不能说black，要说african american。”
“你不能说fat， 要说big。”
“你不能说pray，要说cross hands。”
“你不能说Jesus，只能说god。”。。。
还要教我们的小孩，男的可以和男的结婚，女的可以跟女的结婚。你不必须上男厕所，只要你觉得是女的就可以去女厕所。。。
我觉得很多美国人跟我一样都快疯了。我们说了几百年的话，为什么突然就不让说了？人类用了几千年的厕所规则，你奥巴马说改就改了？资本家赚那么多钱，却不要交很高的税，我们中产阶级一天工作10个小时，交了bill和税跟那些不上班在家睡大觉的没太大差别。。
所以，川普的出现是个必然。美国的历史车轮驶向何方，这次大选至关重要。川普没有伤害过我们，他只是代表我们去参加这次选举。他不是个完美的人，只是有点勇敢，有点正义，有点倔强。
