Please join the USC U.S.-China Institute for a discussion of key issues involving the South China Sea and its disputed islands. What: South China Sea: Conflict or Cooperation? When: Friday, March 4, 2016, 10am-noon Where: ASC 207, Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, USC Campus Cost: Free For an area with the tiniest of populations, the South China Sea certainly gets a lot of attention from world leaders, military strategists, shippers, energy and fisheries planners, and the general public. A number of countries lay claim to islands and rocks in the 1.4 million square mile region. Much of the oil that powers the economies of China, Japan, and South Korea passes through the area. So does a huge share of global trade. China's built air strips, the Philippines has gone to court, Vietnam and China have sparred over oil exploration, the United States has sailed ships and flown planes near the disputed islands and rocks, and last month, Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou visited an island controlled by Taiwan's military, but claimed by three other governments. The region deserves the attention its getting. The event is sponsored by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the U.S.-China Forum. Avoid traffic and get to USC by taking the Metro's Expo Line Parking Structure X (PSX) : $12/day Enter at the Figueroa Street Entrance at 35th Street (Entrance 3) |

The Red Cross Rejects Campaign Was a Success! You Made it Possible! Our end of the year fund drive to save five children who were abandoned by the large foundations like the Red Cross has been successful beyond our expectations. Thirty thousand dollars were raised and all of these children can now be helped. We thank you, our donors for your kind generosity. There are so many children like the five you helped to save last year. We are hoping that your generosity will continue into 2016. Her Heart is Failing and She Needs Your Help! Xiao Wang is a 15 year old girl from Zhaotong Prefecture in Yunnan Province. Her Mom and Dad are farmers and their income is only 5,000 Yuan ($800) per year. She has severe leakage of one of her heart valves which is abnormally formed (tricuspid valve incompetence). This condition is relatively rare and surgical treatment is expensive and can only be done is special centers. Xiao Wang is frequently short of breath and cannot participate in physical education or dance classes though her dream is to learn Chinese and Western classical ballet. Fortunately, Xiao Wang can receive excellent surgical treatment from Professor Wu Qin Yu of Beijing’s Qing Hua University Hua Xin affiliate hospital. China California Heart Watch was able to raise $3,000 at a benefit dinner for Xiao Wang on January 24 but she needs another $7,000 to cover the cost of her surgical treatment in Beijing. Make a donation now or visit our donation page (www.chinacal.org) and annotate on the donation page your wish to support surgery for Xiao Wang. 1. If you donate between $1,000 and $4,000, I personally will match your sponsorship donations so that we can save Little Wang. 2. If you donate 150 dollars or more, we will send to you a beautiful tote bag like this: 3. If you live in the Orange County area and donate at least $500 during the month of February, Professor Lin Shin of the UCI department of Cell Biology and a known master in Tai Chi and Qi Gong, will give you a free half day lesson in the basics of Tai Chi on the UCI campus on a Tuesday at his convenience and yours. This is an unprecedented opportunity to be introduced to this art: www.chinacal.org
