Thank you for sharing. I completely agree that Jimmy Kimmel and the producers of his show should be held accountable for their actions and the American public should be sensitive to the Asian American identity as to other identities. In 2006, Michael Richards, the actor who played Kramer in Seinfeld had an unscripted racist spout. The end result was similar to our recent incident: a public apology from those responsible. But, unlike Michael Richards’s incident, we Asian Americans lack vocal, qualified, and established celebrity figureheads such as Reverend Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who are recognized by mainstream America. This is a full-time job that, apparently, not many qualified Asian Americans are able to pursue without abandoning our careers or are willing to pursue after becoming fully established. |
