The Biggest Market By Far: Video Gaming In China Date: Thursday, March 8 Time: 4:00-5:30pm Location: Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, ASC 207, USC Free. China accounts for over a quarter of the global video game/esports market. Lisa Hanson, who has studied the Chinese market since 2002, will highlight key trends in that market. With 600 million gamers (nearly twice the population of the US), China is the single-most important market in the world for PC online and mobile games, and dominates the global esports market. China''''s Tencent is the largest game company in the world. This talk will discuss the factors driving the market as well as the trends in what gamers prefer, companies, games, and competitors that are important.
In 2002 Lisa Hanson built the first baseline study on the Chinese games market. For 16 years, as founder and managing partner of Niko Partners, she's helped game publishers, platforms, hardware companies, hedge funds, media companies, trade associations, consulting firms, and consumer brands understand and succeed in China and Southeast Asia, which are the largest and fastest growing games markets in the world. Lisa built a team of analysts based in Asia, the US and the UK to provide market research and consulting about the digital games markets in Asia. Prior to Niko, Lisa was Lead Strategist at Viant Corporation, Director at IDC, and a financial analyst in London and in Tokyo. Caught between Empires: A Preliminary Observation of the Recent Rise of Nationalism in Taiwan, Okinawa and Hong Kong Thursday, March 8, 2018 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Bunche Hall 10383,UCLA
Lecture by Rwei-Ren Wu, Academia Sinica A new wave of polity-seeking nationalisms has emerged in recent years in the contiguous maritime peripheral areas of Northeast Asia—the overlapping “spheres of influence” of three contending imperial centers: Taiwan, Okinawa and Hong Kong. The nearly simultaneous rise of nationalism in these three geopolitical peripheries should be understood as a macro-historical sociological phenomenon caused by both the short-term penetration from centralizing colonial and geopolitical center(s) which triggered nationalist mobilization in the periphery and the long-term process of peripheral nation-formation which created the social basis for mobilization. The three cases also demonstrate some other traits of anti-center peripheral nationalism: they all adopted a similar ideological strategy of indigeneity, and all developed a differentiation between radical and pragmatic lines characteristic of minority or peripheral nationalisms. Subsided for the time being, the structural conflict between the three maritime peripheries and the centers persists and could be reignited by newer favorable conditions.

Song Jiaoren (Sung Chiao-jen,1882-1913) was a revolutionist and the founder of the Kuomintang (KMT). He was assassinated in March of 1913 in Shanghai after his leading KMT to victory in China’s first democratic election. This talk will investigate how the members of KMT who owned Minli Pao (民立报) published in Shanghai as both mouthpiece of the revolutionary party and mass media produce and use the images of Song’s corpse for the purpose of mibilizing the mass to.protest the assassination. This talk will try to explore portrait photo’s function and practice between propaganda and journalism and its usage as a means of visual mobilization from three aspects of production, distribution and consumption in the Republican Shanghai.
