Dr. Peng Li received his M.D. from Shanghai First Medical College in 1955, and, in 1958, completed his postdoctoral training in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Hua San Hospital. From 1955 to 1997, Dr. Li was on the faculty of the Shanghai Medical University (now called Medical College of Shanghai Fudan University). He is professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology from 1986-1998 and Vice Chair of the National Key of Medical Neuroscience, China from 1992-1994. In 1983-84, Dr. Li was an Honorary Research Fellow at the Medical School of the University of Birmingham.
Dr. Li’s primary research focus has been the mechanism of stress induced cardiovascular disease and the effect of acupuncture on cardiovascular diseases. He has published over 145 papers, as well as two monographs related to the mechanism of acupuncture. Dr. Li received nine First and Second Class Awards from the Chinese Ministry of Health and the Educational Committee of China. He was honored as a “National Advanced Scientist in the Universities of China” and as a “Young and Middle-Aged Outstanding Specialist of China” in 1990. Other awards include the1992 Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Biographical Institute, and the Twentieth Century Silver Award for Achievement from the Cambridge International Biographical Center in 1996. Dr. Li has been a member of the Council of Chinese Physiological Society, the IUPS, the British Physiological Society, the American Physiological Society, Neuroscience, the IBRO, etc. Has been a Visiting Professor of University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Japan (1991, 1992), and a Visiting Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at UC Davis (1997). Dr. Li is now a researcher in the Department of Medicine at UC Irvine, and also a licensed acupuncturist in California. He is studying the effect of acupuncture on cardiovascular diseases and analyzing the mechanism. Also he is editing a database for Chinese Herbal Medicine for Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine in UCI.
