Upcoming Exhibition - Dunhuang:Buddhist Art at the Gateway of the Silk Road ~ Opening on April 19, 2013
Dunhuang, the western gateway to China, is one of the world's most esteemed art pilgrimage and cultural heritage sites. Situated on the Silk Road at the intersection of civilizations, Dunhuang played an indispensable role in transcontinental trade and the transmission of Buddhism in Asia. The Mogao Grottoes, located at this ancient garrison town, contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art, spanning over one thousand years. Dunhuang:Buddhist Art at the Gateway of the Silk Road will illuminate the golden age of Buddhist art and religious practice in this region during the Northern Dynasties(420–589)period and the Tang dynasty(618–907)through an examination of the caves and their murals, the recovered Buddhist sutras, and other cultural relics unearthed from this site. Lecture:Re-discovering the Lost Capital of the Yuan Dynasty:Middle Capital & Clearance of Chinese Relics to Leave China ~ March 16, 2013
From the time of Genghis Khan's conquest in 1206, which created the largest land empire in human history, to the fall of the Yuan dynasty in China in 1368, the Mongols established four capitals in their conquered Chinese territories. Three of the four capitals have been excavated and studied in depth, but the fourth, known as the Middle Capital, remained a mystery until its discovery in 1997 by Professor Liu Jianhua and her team. Join Professor Liu for an archaeological adventure to explore one of the most important archaeological discoveries in China in the last century. Professor Liu Jianhua is a renowned Chinese archaeologist and the director of the Hebei Provincial Office in charge of authenticating and clearing Chinese state-level relics for entering and leaving China. In the second part of her lecture, she will address issues related to the protection of national treasures. This lecture will be in Chinese. More...
Weng Tonghe:Imperial Tutor for Two Qing Dynasty Emperors ~ March 30, 2013
A Confucian scholar holding the highest degree in the imperial examinations(Zhuangyuan), Weng Tonghe served as imperial tutor for two Qing emperors(Tongzhi and Guangxu). Concurrently with his duties as imperial tutor, he also held a number of prominent positions in the Qing government. In this lecture, Mr. Wang Zhongliang, President of the Weng Tonghe Museum in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, will discuss Weng Tonghe's life story and accomplishments. Weng Tonghe's great-great-grandson, Weng Wan-go, served as the president of China Institute in the 1980s and has since remained active in China Institute's activities as a trustee emeritus.
