The basic facts of China's rise to preeminence over the past three decades are well documented, but how did this erstwhile sleeping giant finally manage to arrive at its current phase of dynamic growth? How, after such a long and painful period of dynastic decline, intellectual upheaval and revolution, foreign occupation and civil war, did a country once derided as the "sick man of Asia" manage to break out of its old pattern of repeatedly failed reform efforts to burst forth onto the world stage with such an impressive run of hyperdevelopment and wealth creation? By examining the lives of eleven influential officials, writers, activists, and leaders whose contributions helped create modern China, Wealth and Power addresses these questions. This survey begins in the lead-up to the first Opium War with Wei Yuan, the nineteenth-century scholar and reformer who was one of the first to urge China to borrow ideas from the West. It concludes in our time with human-rights advocate and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, an outspoken opponent of single-party rule. Along the way, we meet such titans of Chinese history as the Empress Dowager Cixi, public intellectuals Feng Guifen, Liang Qichao, and Chen Duxiu, Nationalist stalwarts Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek, and Communist Party leaders Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Zhu Rongji. The common goal that unites all of these disparate figures is their determined pursuit of fuqiang 富 强, shorthand for "wealth and power." This abiding quest for a restoration of national greatness in the face of a "century of humiliation" at the hands of the Great Powers came to define the modern Chinese character. It's what drove both Mao and Deng to embark on root-and-branch transformations of Chinese society, first by means of Marxism-Leninism, then by authoritarian capitalism. And this determined quest remains the key to understanding many of China's actions today. By unwrapping the intellectual antecedents of today's resurgent China, Orville Schell and John Delury supply much-needed insight into the country's tortured progression from nineteenth-century decline to twenty-first-century boom. By looking backward into the past to understand forces at work for hundreds of years, they help us understand China today and the future that this singular country is helping shape for all of us. About the Authors Orville Schell, author of more than a dozen books, studied Chinese history at Harvard and Berkeley and has written for many publications, including The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Time, Foreign Affairs,The New York Review of Books, Harper's, and The New York Times. Many students may have returned home for the summer. Here are some more helpful tips on dealing with the summer transition：

• Make sure your student knows that you are happy to have them home with you and that you missed them.
• Communication is key. Your student has lived away from you for the last year and has developed new habits and a new lifestyle. Be flexible with them, but at the same time, encourage a respectful, adult relationship with you so you can freely discuss issues or problems.
• Work with your student on establishing a budget and other financial management tools. The summer is a good time to review your student’s financial needs for the upcoming school year. This may also lead into a discussion on establishing career goals and how to reach them. For more advice and information, visit the USC Career Center’s website at http://careers.usc.edu/.
• Conflicts may arise with curfews, visiting friends, household chores and financial issues, among others. Negotiate resolutions to potential conflicts quickly and ensure everyone in the family understands the house rules.

Move-In Day is on Wednesday, August 21. Current students, parents, staff and alumni will be present to welcome new students to the Trojan family and assist with the move-in process. Don’t Forget…Request a Waiver of Health Insurance for Your Student
Student Health insurance is automatically added to the fee bills of domestic students enrolled in six units or more, international students enrolled in any number of units and all Health Science campus students enrolled in any class. If your student is covered by private health insurance which meets USC requirements, parents may request a Waiver of Health Insurance from the USC Student Health Service on a yearly basis. If the form is not filled out, the student will be billed for health insurance on their semester fee bill. Please access http://www.usc.edu/uphc（under Health Insurance）for waiver criteria. The fall deadline for insurance enrollment or requesting a waiver is September 13, 2013. The deadline for spring is January 31, 2014.

Help Your Student “Be Well” at USC
Research shows that more and more students are coming to college as non-drinkers. The reality is that most of these students will be confronted with alcohol once they arrive on campus. In order to prepare students for this transition, USC requires every incoming student to take AlcoholEdu for College, an online course designed to reduce the risks surrounding alcohol. All incoming undergraduate students will receive an informational email about the course, which they must complete before arriving on campus.

Since parents play such a large role in influencing student alcohol use, USC also offers AlcoholEdu for Parents（visit http://parents.alcoholedu.com/ and use the following Login ID：P123961PARENT）. Parents are encouraged to take this course and discuss alcohol use with their student before and after he or she arrives on campus. The Parent course will go live on Wednesday, July 24（the same day as the student course）.

In addition to alcohol, there are many other health and wellness issues that students may experience as they transition to college. From sleep and stress to nutrition and healthy relationships, USC is committed to addressing all areas of health and wellness.

The Getty's Pacific Standard Time at USC Dornsife
One of more than 30 institutes and centers at USC Dornsife, the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West（ICW）is an innovative collaboration between the Huntington Library and USC. ICW has launched an online exhibit as part of The Getty's Pacific Standard Time Presents Initiative on Modern Architecture in Los Angeles, 1940-1990. Principal investigators Greg Hise（UNLV）and William Deverell（ICW and USC）, along with project team members Kris Mun and Jessica Kim, as well as fifteen additional curators, announced the launch of their collaborative online exhibit exploring "Form and Landscape" in the Los Angeles Basin. Free Monthly Tour of the USC Shoah Foundation on July 17
Discover how the life stories and memories of Holocaust survivors and witnesses are being used to overcome prejudice, intolerance and bigotry through visual history and education programs all over the world. If you enjoyed the demonstration of the archive during Trojan Family Weekend, this tour will show you how testimonies are digitized and translated into the Shoah Foundation archived format for translation into ten languages, indexing and preservation. USC Dornsife at the Los Angeles Central Library on July 23
Join author Rebecca Solnit, historians William Deverell and Donald Jackson and moderator Los Angeles Times columnist and radio host Patt Morrison at the Los Angeles Central Library（Mark Taper Auditorium）for a discussion of the St. Francis Dam tragedy and its enduring catastrophic and cultural significance. In March 1928, the St. Francis Dam north of Los Angeles—designed by William Mulholland as a reservoir for the California Aqueduct—collapsed. The largest engineering disaster in California history is inextricably woven into the epic history of water in Los Angeles. Stop by the Japanese American National Museum in downtown LA before August 25!
Visible & Invisible is a collaboration between the Hapa Japan Database Project, the USC Center for Japanese Religions and Culture and the Japanese American National Museum. Visible & Invisible reveals the long “mixed” history in the Japanese American community. The exhibition also tackles the history of racial segregation and anti-miscegenation laws that prohibited or even criminalized marriages between White and non-White peoples. Today, the Japanese American community continues to explore questions of belonging and identity as Hapa Japanese Americans expand notions of family and community, challenging us to imagine new possibilities for the future. Parents Invited to Interfraternity and Intersorority Parent Council Meetings
Parents are invited to attend the Joint USC Intersorority Parent Council（ISPC）and Interfraternity Parent Council（IFPC）Meetings during the 2013-2014 academic year. The ISPC and the IFPC are organizations that consist of parents of sorority and fraternity members. There is an ISPC Board and an IFPC Board that work together to support USC sorority/fraternity parent clubs, develop positive public relations, award annual scholarships and organize joint meetings that are held at various sorority houses on “The Row.” The meetings are open to all parents and will be held on November 14, January 23 and March 27. The meetings consist of a general meeting with updates provided by sorority and fraternity chapter presidents, additional updates provided by Beth Saul（Director for Fraternity and Sorority Leadership Development and Parent Programs）and a featured speaker.
