Dear Trojan Parents and Family Members,

The 2013-2014 school year and the arrival of the USC class of 2017 are right around the corner! Move-In Day is Wednesday, August 21 and classes start on Monday, August 26.

The Office for Parent Programs would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Ainsley Carry, the new Vice Provost of Student Affairs. Prior to joining USC, Dr. Carry served as Vice President of Student Affairs at Auburn University and Associate Vice President and Dean of Students at Temple University in Philadelphia in addition to other private and public institutions. With two decades of student affairs and teaching experience, Dr. Carry will bring a broad perspective to higher education leadership. Welcome to USC and FIGHT ON!  

Students will arrive on campus soon. Here are some tips to help your student with the transition back to campus:

• Communication is key! Your student develops new habits and new lifestyle patterns while they are away at school. Encourage a respectful, adult relationship with you so you can freely discuss issues or problems.
• Make the transition seem easy on you（even if it’s not）. Recognize that there is a transition time for both the student and the parents but that your role is to be supportive.
• Encourage your student to take responsibility in areas such as finances and bill payments and have them review expenditures on a monthly basis.
• Stay in touch with your student via social media and be flexible with how your student chooses to communicate with you. Students also appreciate surprise care packages sent in the mail.
• Make sure your student knows how to reach you in case of an emergency.
• Tell your student you are proud of them!

RSVP to the Office for Parent Programs’ Exclusive Associates Pre-Game Picnic on September 7
The USC Office for Parent Programs is excited to invite you and your family to the exclusive USC Associates Pre-game Picnic to kick off the 2013 football season.  Starting at 4:30pm on Saturday, September 7 at Founders Park on the USC campus, enjoy delicious food and dessert buffets, a complete range of beverages and special appearances by the USC Trojan Marching Band, Song Girls and Spirit Leaders. Tickets vary to meet your needs: $68 per person（ages 21 and over）includes three alcohol beverages; $60 per person（ages 13 and up）alcohol not included; $35 per person（for children ages 4-12）and free for children 3 and under. Register for the First Parent Speaker Series event on Tuesday, September 17
All parents are invited to the Office for Parent Programs Speaker Series on Tuesday, September 17 at the Ronald Tutor Center Campus Ballroom on the USC campus. The parent social starts at 5:30pm with dinner following at 6pm. Professor John Monterosso, of the USC Department of Psychology will speak on “The Psychology of Happiness”. Parents also will  receive university updates and have a chance to network with other parents.

The second Speakers Series program will be Tuesday, November 19 in The Forum Room（#450）at the Ronald Tutor Campus Center. The program will feature Dr. Najmedin Meshkati of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Dr. Meshkati will discuss his research in the fields of safety and risk reduction in nuclear power, aviation, petrochemical and transportation industries, among other topics, including contributions made by USC students.

A one-of-a-kind Gayle Roski scarf is available through the Office for Parent Programs and makes a beautiful gift. This 36” x 36” silk scarf was designed by Gayle exclusively for the USC Parents Association to raise money for its projects. Gayle is a USC alumna, a renowed artist and the named benefactor of the USC Gayle Roski School of Fine Arts. Fall Move-In Day is Fast Approaching
Move-In Day is Wednesday, August 21. Current students, parents, staff and alumni will be present to welcome new students to the Trojan family and assist with the move-in process. This site answers common check-in questions, provides important contact information and what your student should bring to campus.
There are several events for parents and students during Move-In Day week including:

• The USC Band Parents reception will be from 4pm to 5:30pm on Sunday, August 18 in Associates Park（across from the USC Bookstore）. This will be a great opportunity to meet other band parents, learn about the band’s upcoming events and meet the band director, Dr. Arthur C. Bartner. • The University Residential College at Birnkrant will offer an early Friends, Family & Residents Welcome Reception from 3:30pm - 4:30pm on Monday, August 19. Don’t Forget…Request a Waiver of Health Insurance for Your Student
Student Health insurance is automatically added to the fee bills of domestic students enrolled in six units or more, international students enrolled in any number of units and all Health Science campus students enrolled in any class. If your student is covered by private health insurance which meets USC requirements, parents may request a Waiver of Health Insurance from the USC Student Health Service on a yearly basis. If the form is not filled out, the student will be billed for health insurance on their semester fee bill. Please access www.usc.edu/engemann（under Health Insurance）for waiver criteria. The fall deadline for insurance enrollment or requesting a waiver is September 13, 2013. The deadline for spring is January 31, 2014.

Help Your Student “Be Well” at USC
Research shows that more and more students are coming to college as non-drinkers. The reality is that most of these students will be confronted with alcohol once they arrive on campus. To prepare students for this transition, USC requires every incoming student to take AlcoholEdu for College, an online course designed to reduce the risks surrounding alcohol. All incoming undergraduate students will receive an informational email about the course, which they must complete before arriving on campus on Wednesday, August 21. Students should save their screen shot of completion.

Since parents play such a large role in influencing student alcohol use, USC also offers AlcoholEdu for Parents（visit http://parents.alcoholedu.com/ and use the following Login ID:  P123961PARENT）. Parents are encouraged to take this course and discuss alcohol use with their student before and after he or she arrives on campus.

In addition to alcohol, there are many other health and wellness issues that students may experience as they transition to college. From sleep and stress to nutrition and healthy relationships, USC is committed to addressing all areas of health and wellness.

Registration is now open for Freshfest 2013! FreshFest is a retreat（held on August 19-20）for incoming Jewish Trojans to meet fellow USC students, get tips from upperclassmen about campus life, move into your residence hall early and get a head start at USC. Career Center Programs Kickoff the New School Year

Center for Women & Men Offers Educational Workshops and Support Groups for Members of Our Trojan Family
The Center for Women & Men（CWM）offers comprehensive programs about fostering a respectful campus culture and helping those members of the Trojan family who have experienced dating violence, sexual harassment, stalking, sexual assault, or childhood sexual abuse.  Through small-group discussions led by center staff, students learn about nurturing healthy relationships, appropriately intervening in problematic social situations, and preventing sexual assault. Students interested in serving as resources for peers can become part of a new program that trains students on helping their friends and positively impacting their communities. Male students also can go through training to serve as peer educators through the USC Men Care program. For survivors of sexual assault and other gender-related issues, the Center for Women & Men offers confidential one-on-one counseling and support groups for female survivors, male survivors as well as ones that address specific populations such as students with disabilities who are survivors of gender-based harm or military veterans who are survivors of gender-based harm. Discover how the life stories and memories of Holocaust survivors and witnesses are being used to overcome prejudice, intolerance and bigotry through visual history and education programs all over the world. Stop by the Japanese American National Museum in Downtown LA before August 25
Visible & Invisible is a collaboration between the Hapa Japan Database Project, the USC Center for Japanese Religions and Culture and the Japanese American National Museum. Visible & Invisible reveals the long “mixed” history in the Japanese American community. The exhibition also tackles the history of racial segregation and anti-miscegenation laws that prohibited or even criminalized marriages between White and non-White peoples. Today, the Japanese American community continues to explore questions of belonging and identity as Hapa Japanese Americans expand notions of family and community, challenging us to imagine new possibilities for the future. See Actor Mike Farrell in Dr. Keeling’s Curve on September 9
Best known for his eight years on M*A*S*H as Army Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt and five years on Providence as Dr. Jim Hansen, Mike Farrell is also a writer, director and producer. He stars as Dr. Charles David Keeling in an all-too-real and often funny one-man bio-play that makes global warming understandable, and reveals it to be anything but a myth. The play will be performed at 7pm on Monday, September 9 at the Bing Theatre on the USC campus. Provost’s Writers Series Kick Off on September 12
The Provost’s Writers Series highlights the extraordinary talents of USC authors. Throughout the year, Provost Elizabeth Garrett will host four evenings featuring USC faculty, who will read from and discuss their recent publications. The series provides opportunities for students and the community to engage with USC authors, learn about the incredible diversity of their work and celebrate the written word.

The 2013–14 Provost’s Writers Series will kick off at 7pm on Thursday, September 12 with Jack Halberstam, a professor of American studies and ethnicity, gender studies and comparative literature at USC. Halberstam is also the author of five books, including Skin Shows：Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters, Female Masculinity, In a Queer Time and Place and The Queer Art of Failure.  His most recent book, Gaga Feminism：Sex, Gender and the End of Normal, attempts to make sense of the tectonic shifts that have transformed gender and sexual politics in the last few decades. Halberstam is currently working on several projects, including a book called The Wild on queer anarchy. The event will be held at USC University Club at Kings Stoops Hall. Welcome Reception for Fraternity Parents on September 16
Parents of fraternity members are invited to an Interfraternity Parents Council（IFPC）Welcome Reception from 10am – 1pm on Monday, September 16 at the Widney Alumni House. Learn more about the IFPC, the USC fraternity system and fraternity parents clubs. Meet the IFPC Board as well as other parents. Parents Invited to Interfraternity and Intersorority Parent Council Meetings
Parents are invited to attend the Joint USC Intersorority Parent Council（ISPC）and Interfraternity Parent Council（IFPC）Meetings during the 2013-2014 academic year. The ISPC and the IFPC are organizations that consist of parents of sorority and fraternity members. There is an ISPC Board and an IFPC Board that work together to support USC sorority/fraternity parent clubs, develop positive public relations, award annual scholarships and organize joint meetings that are held at various sorority houses on “The Row.” The meetings are open to all parents and will be held on November 14, January 23 and March 27. The meetings consist of a general meeting with updates provided by sorority and fraternity chapter presidents, additional updates provided by Beth Saul（Director for Fraternity and Sorority Leadership Development and Parent Programs）and a featured speaker. USC Shoah Foundation honors George Clooney on October 3
Join the USC Shoah Foundation in New York City for their 2013 Ambassadors for Humanity Gala starting at 8pm on Thursday, October 3. Make Reservations for the Trojan Express on October 19
Join the USC Department of Athletics from Chicago to South Bend on Saturday, October 19 to cheer on the USC Trojans football team against the Fighting Irish. The Trojan Express train will depart from downtown Chicago at 1pm（CST）. Train reservation orders will be on a first-come basis. The cost is $200 per person. The price includes round-trip transportation from Chicago to the football stadium in South Bend, light lunch/dinner and refreshments, special souvenir, game program, rain poncho and a pom pom. The Getty's Pacific Standard Time at USC Dornsife
One of more than 30 institutes and centers at USC Dornsife, the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West（ICW）is an innovative collaboration between the Huntington Library and USC. ICW has launched an online exhibit as part of The Getty's Pacific Standard Time Presents Initiative on Modern Architecture in Los Angeles, 1940-1990. Principal investigators Greg Hise（UNLV）and William Deverell（ICW and USC）, along with project team members Kris Mun and Jessica Kim, as well as fifteen additional curators, announced the launch of their collaborative online exhibit exploring "Form and Landscape" in the Los Angeles Basin.
