Huawei to Invest $4b in Fixed Broadband R&D in Next 3 Years

Beijing. Huawei Technologies, the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker, said it would invest more than $4 billion in fixed broadband technology research and development（R&D）in the next three years.

Huawei, which has shifted its focus to the mobile device market in recent years, said in a statement on Thursday that fixed broadband – the pipes connecting homes and offices – remained a “key direction for strategic investment.”

The Shenzhen-based company said it would research basic technologies such as photonics used in fiber optic cables as well as software-defined networking.

NAROS UPDATE

NAROS Held Information Sessions in the East Coast

The North American Representative Office of Shenzhen successfully held information sessions highlighting Shenzhen’s innovation environment in Cornell University, Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University and Duke University respectively this month. Those events attracted a total of around 200 students and working professionals who consider Shenzhen as a potential destination to work and to establish their businesses.

The information session tour is NAROS’ first attempt of exploring more efficient ways to advise innovators and entrepreneurs across North America about Shenzhen’s general environment as well as the service it could provide in facilitating the various bilateral collaborations.

NAROS Co-organized Shenzhen-Chicago Investment Cooperation Conferce

Chicago,IL- Headed by Mr. Jia, Changsheng, Deputy Director-General of Invest Shenzhen, Shenzhen Municipality Delegation ran a seminar “Reform and Opportunities in Shenzhen” on September 23,at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile Hotel. Mr. Jia, Changsheng made a keynote speech. There are about 100 guests, including the local government representatives,investment corporations, manufacturing enterprises and local chambers of commerce attending.

At the end of event, there is an Investment Cooperation Signing Ceremony. Invest Shenzhen signed an agreement with United States of America-China Chamber of Commerce involving a plan to promote Shenzhen-Chicago Investment Cooperation.

Shenzhen Pushes For "Very Aggressive" 2018 Deadline for Pearl River Delta ECA

Hong Kong's Christine Loh Kung-Wai says 2018 timetable is "very agressive"

Local government in Chinese port city Shenzhen is pushing a "very aggressive" deadline for the implemention of an Emissions Control Area（ECA）covering the Pearl River Delta by 2018, South China Morning Post reports.

Deputy Director at Shenzhen's Human Settlements and Environment Commission, Li Shuisheng, has said the local government there is pushing for a zone that would require the use of low sulfur bunker fuel, with the hope it would expand across the country.

Cisco to sink $16m in cloudy Chiense joint venture with TCL Corp

Cisco is planning to set up a new $80m commercial cloud joint venture with Chinese electronics firm TCL Corp, according to a company filing.

TCL told Shenzhen Stock Exchange（translated by Google）that Cisco would invest $16m in the new firm and hold a 20 per cent stake, while TCL takes care of the rest of the investment for the remaining stake.

The firms will make their investments in three stages, with both companies needing to meet conditions of the agreement before each tranche of cash is paid.

Tencent Leads Financing for Chinese Healthcare Website Guahao

Tencent Holdings TCEHY -1.02% has led an investment of more than $100 million in a Chinese health care platform, the latest move by the Internet conglomerate to expand its user base through online medical services as it competes against Alibaba. No precise figure for Tencent’s portion of the funding was provided by either company.

The medical platform, Guahao.com, announced the round of funding Monday on its website, saying it would be collaborating further with Tencent in Internet-based health services.

European Tour adds Shenzhen International to 2015 Schedule

Dignitaries announce the addition of the Shenzhen International to the 2015 European Tour schedule

Golf fans throughout the Pearl River Delta region of China will have the chance to see some of the world’s best golfers in action following the announcement that the inaugural Shenzhen International will be held at Genzon Golf Club, in the Longgang district of Shenzhen, from April 16–19, 2015.

With a field comprising 100 players from The European Tour, 50 players from China Golf Association and six sponsors’ invitations, the US$2.5 million tournament will be played the week after the year’s first Major, the Masters Tournament.

The Neil Haworth-designed championship course at Genzon Golf Club, which was the venue for this year’s Volvo China Open, will host the tournament.

An Urban Utopia In The Clouds Won The Shenzhen Super City Award

In the concept architecture photos for Cloud Citizen, the winner of the Shenzhen Super City Competition, stacks of hyper-dense, eco-friendly floors shoot into the sky. Designed by the joint efforts of the Urban Future Organization, CR Architecture+Design, and a computing team at Chalmers University of Technology, Cloud Citizen is a step toward a green future full of, "future cities capable of giving back more to the environment than they cost," according to a Chalmers press release.

All 170 hectares of the 680 meter-tall super city work in cooperation with nature to make that future a reality; lush gardens act as "green lungs" connecting each of Cloud Citizen's public spaces; built-in mechanisms harvest rainwater, and power the city with solar, wind, and algae-based energy, special sections of the city will store carbon and filter particles from the air, while housing sanctuaries for plant life; localized food production modules and housing will cut down on carbon emissions from transportation. These diverse elements work together to create a harmonious vision of the cities of the future.
