Innovation and Invention:Transformations in the Art of Tang Poetry

Zhu Qi, a scholar and writer, resides in the United States. He received his PhD in Chinese Literature from Peking University in 1990. After coming to the United States, he taught for several years in the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley before moving on to teach for over a decade in the Department of Asian Languages & Culture at Stanford University. He currently works as an independent scholar, researching, writing about, and disseminating Chinese history and culture. Zhu Qi is renowned for his lectures on Chinese culture, having earned a reputation for being one of the “must-see sights of the Silicon Valley.” His prose essays on Chinese culture have received extensive critical acclaim. His published collections include: Children of the Yellow River; Children of the East; Reading Ten-Thousand Roads; Looking East, Looking West; and Ten Years in a Laugh.

中國歷史到唐代而臻于極盛,中國詩歌也在唐代達到頂峰,唐詩展現了唐人豐富飽滿、浪漫飛揚的心靈,也展現了唐人不斷創新、千變萬化的審美境界。初唐的王勃、陳子昂已顯示出恢宏博大的時空意識,盛唐的王之渙、王昌齡更擅長在短小的絕句中轉換時空鏡頭,王維則融匯了繪畫、音樂和詩歌。詩至李白、杜甫而爐火純青,中、晚唐詩人唯有不斷突破,另闢蹊徑。韓愈、孟郊追求險怪硬語盤空,白居易、元稹追求淺淡而通俗易懂,李賀擎著幻想的神燈照亮了神仙世界和鬼蜮世界,李商隱把人生的萬般心緒濃縮在朦朧含蓄的格律詩中。唐人窮盡詩歌藝術之變,今天勾勒這一演變過程,應該也是如飲醇醪的藝術享受。
朱琦,旅美學者、作家。1990年在北京大學中文系獲文學博士學位,1991年春遊學日本東京,1992年秋到美國訪學。曾任教於加州柏克萊大學東亞語言文學系,後在斯坦福大學亞洲語言文化系任教多年,現已辭去教職,致力於歷史文化的研究、寫作和傳播。多年來,朱琦以文化講座聞名海外,被譽為「矽谷的另一道風景」。朱琦的歷史文化隨筆也廣獲好評,出版有《黃河的孩子》、《東方的孩子》、《讀萬里路》、《東張西望》、《十年一笑》等作品集。
