CCA Launches Membership Engagement Effort
With the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to hear the Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association lawsuit this fall, unions around the country – including CTA – are launching new membership engagement efforts to strengthen, rebuild and rejuvenate their membership. Meanwhile, CCA President Lynette Nyaggah has a very personal story to share about the importance of unions to the teaching profession.
Part-time Faculty Benefit from Union Membership
Contingent faculty have been welcomed into CTA’s union for years, and have benefitted professionally as a result. CCA/CTA continues to work with adjunct faculty to expand their rights on a statewide and local level. Some of the recent accomplishments by CCA’s local chapters include salary increases, rehire rights and office hours.
State Budget Provides Funding to Hire Hundreds of New Faculty
California community colleges are sure to benefit from the $29.2 billion directed to them in the $167.6 billion state budget signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in June. The spending plan for higher education provides $62.3 million Prop. 98 General Fund for hiring hundreds of full-time faculty and for other factors contributing to student success, including part-time parity and office hours. The Higher Education Act:What You Should Know
The Higher Education Act(HEA)is up for reauthorization in the 114th Congress. First passed in 1965 to ensure that every individual has access to higher education, regardless of income, the law governs the nation’s student-aid programs, federal aid to colleges, and oversight of teacher preparation. Learn more about NEA priorities and what it is doing on behalf of your students and you. Online Education May Not Be All ThatDespite the hoopla surrounding online courses, a large study of online education used by students at California's massive community college system found that online students are not doing as well as those who enroll in face-to-face courses, according to Inside Higher Education. What’s your experience been with online education? Contact Dina Martin at dinamartinsf@gmail.com or CCA President Lynette Nyaggah at lnyaggah@gmail.com. Helping the Next Generation of Teachers
Where is the next generation of California teachers coming from? Chances are, many of them are now in our community colleges preparing to transfer and then earn a teaching credential. CTA has an active Student CTA program with chapters on college and university campuses throughout the state. In addition to the professional development opportunities offered to them at conferences, Student CTA members gain valuable training in leadership, organizing, and political action. Teachers' Pension Fund Divests in Firearms
Following a two-year push for divestment by CTA and other education groups, the California State Teachers Retirement System(CalSTRS) has cashed out its holdings in firearms manufacturing. CalSTRS ended its investment in Remington Outdoor this spring, capping an effort that already resulted in the selloff of holdings in Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger. The action sends a powerful message, according to Phyllis Hall, CCA’s representative on CTA’s Retirement Committee and CTA Liaison to CalSTRS. CCA Members Make a Difference on Their Campuses
CCA makes time each year during its Spring Conference to honor faculty members who have made a difference on their campuses. This year, Victor Valley history professor Lisa Ellis received the CCA Jerry Brown Advocacy Award for 2015. Also honored with CCA Faculty Diversity and Equity Awards were John Sullivan, part-time English instructor Riverside Community College, who received the 2015 David B. Milroy Part Time Faculty Award; Jan Mutto, a speech communications professor at Norco College who received the David A. Sanchez GLBTQ Award for 2015; and Saddleback College Political Science instructor who received the Mary Ann Pacheco Award. Learn more about the contributions these faculty have made. You can also check out the W.H.O. Award winners from your campus. CTA Assists Members in Need
With the summer fire season upon us, it’s worth remembering that the CTA Disaster Relief Fund provides assistance to CTA members who have experienced significant losses due to natural disasters in California. The CTA Disaster Relief Fund is funded by CTA members to assist members in need and is administered by the FACT Foundation. Learn more about CTA’s Disaster Relief Fund. What Do You Think?
