Writing as Painting:Chinese Calligraphy Workshop
September 28 through December 18, 2015

This fall at China Institute Gallery, Discover China Through Art(DCTA), the innovative art education program for groups from schools and other organizations, will present a special calligraphy workshop on the history of Chinese characters. Through a video presentation and an experimental ink and brush calligraphy workshop, participants will learn more about Chinese characters, the oldest continuously used system of writing in the world, as well as hands-on experience in calligraphy, the highest art form in Chinese culture.

The Chinese writing system is one of the oldest in the world. In ancient Chinese legends, Chinese characters were created by Cangjie(仓颉), a four-eyed official historian of the Yellow Emperor in prehistoric ages. Through his observations, he realized that the species of birds and beasts could be identified by their footprints. Inspired by this method, Cangjie invented the earliest characters by giving each subject a pictorial resemblance symbol, also known as pictogram.

Though he was a legendary figure, archaeological excavation of oracle bone inscriptions proves that Chinese people had created a well-developed writing system earlier than the late second millennium BC. Chinese scripts and fonts have continued to develop over thousands of years, and we are still using this writing system today.

Video presentations and workshops will be tailored to the needs of the participants. All age groups are welcome.

LECTURE:Early Life of Yuan Shikai and the Formation of the Yuan Family

(Lecture Delivered in Chinese)

Saturday, September 19, 2015, 2:00pm – 4:30pm

Critical debates of the controversial political career of Yuan Shikai, first President of the Republic of China, have always been popular topics in the study of modern Chinese history, but accurate facts about Yuan’s personal life and his family are seldom available. Ms. Jiagan Yuan Gee, a granddaughter of Yuan Shikai, and Prof. Sheau-yueh J. Chao, both of CUNY will discuss the early life of Yuan Shikai before his rise to political prominence; the family structure of the Yuan family during and after Yuan’s time; and the lives of more prominent Yuan sons and daughters in the second and third generations. They will also address the strategy, procedures and significance of the research they used in co-authoring The Yuan Chronicle, a book written in English to be expected to come out next year.
