Why the Pearl River Delta has a bright future

NAROS UPDATE(FEB.)

In December, Beijing convened the Central Urban Work Conference for the first time in 37 years. During the years since the previous meeting, the city cluster in the Pearl River Delta region has witnessed tremendous growth.

In 1978, there were 3 cities and 32 towns in the region, but by 2014 the numbers grew to 16 cities and more than 320 towns. The urbanization rate of the region has surged to 84.12 percent from 26.56 percent during the period, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 1.6 percent.

The city cluster in Pearl River Delta region has posted urbanization rate more than double that of the nation’s average in the period. It has become the “engine” of economic and social development in Guangdong province or even for the whole South China region.

However, rapid growth model based on traditional industrialization has led to various issues, such as traffic congestion, pollution, ecological degradation, slow industrial upgrade, loss of traditional culture and lagging public services.

Shenzhen is the new mecca of aerial vehicles

NAROS UPDATE(FEB.)

SHENZHEN, China - DJI, the market leader in easy-to-fly drones, is the pride of locals on mainland China.

With a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles flying over the company on a recent visit, DJI’s headquarters was not difficult to find.

As the hub of the firm’s development, most areas in the building were restricted. “About 70 percent of 1,500 workers at the headquarters are engineers and researchers,” Moon Tae-hyun, a manager at DJI’s Korea Department said.

There is a sign in front of the CEO’s office located in 21st floor saying “Only the brain can enter, keep out the emotion.” The sign reflects DJI CEO Wang Tao’s principles. “Technology is what is most important.”

Shenzhen art show Adrift explores what it means to be a migrant

NAROS UPDATE(FEB.)

Shenzhen is a city of migrants. Of its 18 million people, eight out of 10 have their hukou – or household registration – somewhere else in China. So the theme of a new exhibition at Shenzhen’s OCT Contemporary Art Terminal(OCAT)will strike a chord with many there.

“Adrift” is a group show by six artists that explores the multifaceted experiences of the world’s migrants, from the daily cross-border commute from Estonia to Finland to the exodus-for-life from China to Hong Kong.

“We considered the likely audience around Lunar New Year and thought this would be an appropriate theme. Those who come to see the show will likely be a migrant who, for one reason or another, cannot go home for the Spring Festival,” says Qu Chang, one of the three young curators behind the exhibition.

“Adrift” is modest in size, but Qu and fellow curators Leo Chen and Zeng Wenqi – all in their 20s – have put together a succinct and intimate narrative under the auspices of OCAT Shenzhen’s newly appointed artistic director, Venus Lau.

ATP Shenzhen and Gstaad better than Slam tournaments in 2015!

NAROS UPDATE(FEB.)

It is said that smaller ATP Tournaments struggle to keep going. It is true, as some events disappeared over the last years. However, there is also who laughs. They will not have Masters 1000's success, but Shenzhen and Gstaad tournaments have an absolute record, better than the greatest tournaments:in 2015 all the first four seeds in the semifinals.

In China Czech Tomas Berdych(then tournament champion), Marin Cilic, Tommy Robredo and Guillermo Garcia Lopez were the protagonists. Gstaad case is even more incredible, since all the eight seeds reached the quarter-finals. It hadn't happened since Montreal 2009. David Goffin, Feliciano Lopez, Dominic Thiem(then champion), Pablo Andujar, Thomaz Bellucci, Joao Sousa, Pablo Carreno Busta and Santiago Giraldo.
