NECINA 20th Anniversary Gala & Annual Meeting
Overview:
We are surrounded by new technologies every single day. We had hoped they will make our lives simpler and yet it seems like every new gadget is making our lives more occupied. Our eyes are glued to the phones even when we are around our loved ones. We use all kinds of Apps to make us look busier, get to point B faster. Are we still doing the right things? Are we pushing the right buttons?
NECINA, as a proud professional organization, has seen its own shares of new technologies created by its own members. Most of these technologies are making a positive and profound impact on us. 2016 is the 20th birthday of NECINA. We want to use the special occasion to celebrate what we have created, and pause for a moment to reflect, and start the next decade on the right foot.
On June 18 we are glad to invite a group of elite founders, entrepreneurs and friends with their visions aligned with ours. We want to have a great discussion on how to use Technology to improve our lives, to leave a long lasting impact to the community and to the world that is nurturing everybody.

Financial Technology Conference Recap - 4/23
|
NECINA's Annual Fintech Conference took place on April 25 at Constant Contact in Waltham. Keynote speaker, David Saul, the SVP and Chief Scientist at State Street started off his presentation proposing the question of "Do you know where your data is?" He then stated that the financial crisis that occurred in 2008 was due to this misunderstanding. He encouraged that the way to improve financial data was through incorporating the Financial Industry Business Ontology(FIBO)standards, which utilizes semantic data to ensure transparency and comprehension of regulations among the financial sector. He then gave an example of how State Street is using FIBO when it comes to their data management. The next speaker, Mitchell Dong told 3 stories to illustrate his hypothesis - Engineering is more than art and science. Good engineers are good with people. He gave one example that they don't have to be extroverts, but instead emphasized how introverts are good listeners, who have the ability to teach, and can learn and adapt quickly. He quoted the words from his mentor "Have a microscope in one eye and have a macroscope in the other eye". It's important to see the big pictures while remaining focus on the present of the day.

Albert MA discussed several challenges/difficulties about learning from source code, such as structured programming syntax vs. infinite ways of implementation, "flat" algorisms vs. complex nature and etc. However, he states that despite these challenges, academic researchers and software vendors are starting to look at how they can effectively apply machine intelligence into their software development. Cherry Zhang discussed "Mobile Financing", in terms of mobile banking and mobile payment, which has started roaring and will continue to do so as anticipated. She discussed that from the application development's perspective, there are three main directions, namely, Native Apps, HTML5 web app and Hybrid apps; so the question becomes, how do we choose? In addition, there are upwards trends for Mobile Disruptors such as loT, Visual Reality, and Wearables, which is only the beginning. Natty from Prattle described sentiment analysis and it can be applied to resolve complex data. She proceeded to give an overview on what they do at Prattle, which is marrying expertise and analytics to impose structure. Furthermore, it is using innovative textual analysis methods, to provide investment decision-making solutions. The day concluded with a panel discussion, where the speakers reiterated the association of technology to better understand the complex data in the financial sector. |
