USC:A Chinese View of The Restoration of China-US Ties
Noted documentary filmmaker Gu Jun produced a ten part series on China-US relations, Between China and the U.S. 中美之间. We will screen two episodes from the series about the Nixon trip in 1972 and the Carter-Deng agreement to restore formal diplomatic relations in 1978. These films share unique archival footage and draw on remarkable conversations with participants in these events, including American figures such as Henry Kissinger, Winston Lord, Jimmy Carter, and Zbigniew Brzezinski and many on the Chinese side who have not previously been interviewed including famed interpreter Tang Wensheng(Nancy Tang). After the screening, Gu Jun will discuss the film with USCI specialists and the audience. The screening is free, but reservations are required.

Gu Jun 顾筠 is a prolific and prize-winning director. She's probably best known for Dreamweavers 筑梦2008, an award-winning film that was seven years in the making and followed the stories of five individuals as China prepared for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She also made Everlasting Flame 永恒之火, the International Olympic Committee's official film for the 2008 Games. More recently, she directed an eight part series about longstanding ties between Chinese and a variety of people along the maritime silk road, Crossing the Silk Road by Sea 穿越海上丝绸之路. Hundreds of millions of people have watched Gu Jun's films.

Co-sponsored with the USC East Asian Library.

China is experiencing a growing wave of labor unrest. What kind of political impact-if any-is this conflict in the "workshop of the world" having? Drawing on a unique dataset of strikes and protests by Chinese workers, as well as regional case studies grounded in extensive interviews,
Manfred Elfstrom will explain how grassroots resistance is pushing the state to paradoxically increase its capacity for both repression and responsiveness at once, with complex long-term consequences for activists and authorities alike.

Manfred Elfstrom is a Postdoctoral Scholar and Teaching Fellow at the University of Southern California's School of International Relations. Previously, he was a China Public Policy Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. His research interests include China, social movements, labor, nationalism, and authoritarianism.
