Dear friends of CSUN China Institute,
Hope you all have had a smooth ending of the semester, and a fun summer to look forward to.
Awakened by the never-ending racial discrimination and violent attacks against minority groups, and shocked by the tragic death of George Floyd and numerous attacks against Asian Americans during the pandemic, China Institute and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences have worked together with local Chinese and Black communities to promote a better understanding of Chinese(Asian)American and Black American histories and cultures. A lot of concerned people have met several times over the Zoom since last May, and this summer we’ll start with two wonderful lectures introducing the history of Black Americans and Asian Americans.
- Dr. Cedric Hackett, Africana Studies, CSUN: Juneteenth Celebration:Road to Freedom; 7-8:30 PM, June 19th, 2021(Saturday)
- Dr. Philip Hutchinson, Asian American Studies, CSUN: The Contemporary Importance of Asian American History:Bridging Past and Present; 7-8:30 PM, June 26th, 2021(Saturday)
Many thanks to Dr. Hackett and Dr. Hutchinson, who are inspirational thinkers and are very kind to share their ideas with us. And thanks to the University Library and the local community CHEER who are co-sponsoring these events. We’ll schedule more events in the summer and in the fall of 2021 -stay tuned!
The month of May is the Asian American and Pacific Islanders heritage month, and as it comes to its conclusion, I like to draw your attention to some local resources for AAPI history and culture.
Have a fun Memorial weekend!
