_ABSTRACT:_

Transnational academic mobility is not a new phenomenon, yet research largely focuses on international student mobility rather than transnational academic mobility. This study examines Chinese academic mobility in relation to the United States. Drawing on data from semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire-based survey, it targets two groups of academics, those returning to China and those staying in US universities. It interrogates the concepts of “brain drain”, “brain gain”, “brain circulation” and “knowledge diaspora”, in the context of shifting patterns of academic mobility between a rising power and a leading power, within a globalizing world characterized by complex interactions and interconnectedness, and shaped by global, national and institutional forces and policies.

Mei Li is an associate professor at the Institute of Higher Education, School of Education Sciences in East China Normal University, Shanghai, China. She is currently a visiting scholar at UCLA. She earned her PhD from the University of Hong Kong in 2006. Her research interests focus on globalisation and internationalisation of Chinese higher education, higher education policy and the academic profession in China.
