APEX Co-Presents Model Minority at the
2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival

The 28th Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival takes place May 10-20.

APEX co-presents the film Model Minority, the feature directorial/screenwriting debut of Japanese American actress Lily Mariye(nurse Lily Jarvik on the longtime running TV series ER), brings home the feeling of what it is like to grow up as a bicultural teenager in multicultural Los Angeles. Director Mariye's film, based loosely on true events of her experiences of growing up Asian American, seeks to break the model minority stereotypes by contrasting them with the harsh realities in this compelling, local coming-of-age tale.

Friday, May 11, 2012
7:00PM-9:00PM
CGV Cinemas

621 South Western Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90005

To puchase tickets for Model Minority and other festival films, please visit:

APEX held its Los Angeles professional networking mixer on April 5 at Elevate Lounge in Downtown Los Angeles. There were plenty of opportunities to network with over 450 attendees and learn about how to get involved with APEX through APEX Cares and Youth Olympics. CAUSE attended to encourage people to "Rock the Vote" and A3M promoted awareness and sign-ups to become bone marrow donors. Guests also enjoyed entertainment by DJ Freddy Ruxpin and singer Adriana.

Community Volunteering with APEX Cares

The 18th Annual APEX Youth Olympics took place at the Los Angeles Police Academy on Saturday, April 28, 2012. Youth Olympics is an all-day event where we bring together at-risk youth, ages 13-17 as participants and young professionals as volunteers for a day of positive competition, growth and bonding. The event is filled with fun challenging superhero theme activities and entertainment, designed to promote respect, courage, integrity, strength, leadership, creativity and inspire youth to become the future leaders of our community. Over 140 youth from 7 local agencies and more than 80 volunteers participated in this event bringing together youth and young professionals for a day of teambuilding, sports, friendship and fun!

The APEX Youth Olympics is a 100% volunteer run event. The Director of Youth Olympics, Carly Nguyen along with the two co-chairs, Aaron Leung and David Yoo planned this event with the help of the Youth Olympics Committee. The team would like to thank our sponsors and volunteers for making this year's event a success! Key sponsors included Panda Express, Jay Kang, Prive Water Delivery, Didi Li, Activate Drinks, American Cancer Society, Pretzel Crisps, UCLA Health System, Disney and Paris Baguette among many more.

The day started with a welcome from our returning emcee, Jesse Jam Miranda, Jasmine Lee singing the national anthem and Ricky Choi, APEX President giving welcoming remarks. Special Guest, Deputy Chief Terry Hara offered encouragement and motivation to the youth. Challenging the youth were a set of activities highlighting leadership characteristics that makes up Captain APEX! This year's activities included A Job for Captain APEX, Protect the City, Stop the Train, Battleship, Save the Citizen and The Danger Zone. Talents from Los Angeles and Orange County including Jordan Lara and Vintage Box volunteered their time to perform at lunch and during our afternoon program. At the end of the day, The Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Court including Queen Lauren Zhao Weinberger, First Princess Eileen Kwan, Second Princess Jane Yap, Third Princess Ruby Chen and Fourth Princess Celine Linarte presented awards and prizes to MVPs from each team at our closing ceremony. All youth participants also received a goody bag filled with items from our generous donors Chick-fil-A, Emergen-C, New York Life, Popchips, Snow Monkey to list a few.

Professional Tip of the Month: Find a Mentor to PULL You Up

Everyone has heard the advice to find a mentor. We all know we should do it, but many of us don't. There are many reasons not to:it takes too much time, I don't know how to ask, I won't get anything out of it, etc. Here's the one reason we should all have mentors within our companies - they can PULL us up the ladder. Climbing up the ladder is great, but getting pulled up is even better. Ever heard of that colleague that got offered a cool opportunity that you wish you had heard about? Find a mentor in another part of your company and let him/her know you are looking to expand your skill set. Next time a great opportunity comes up, your mentor might just give you a ring.
