With multi-million dollar Intellectual Property(IP)lawsuits making headlines and 'IP' being part of the common lexicon in business, an entrepreneur like you may wonder what all this means to your small business. You may wonder how your IP assets --the innovations you have been toiling over, the brand names your customers love, or the business secrets you have been guarding-- can be protected and leveraged. What legal recourse do you have if there are copycat versions of your product on the market? What can you do if you have been slapped with a cease-and-desist letter?
In this seminar, two seasoned IP attorneys from the international law firm K&L Gates, Mr. James Fajkowski and Ms. Phi Lan Tinsley, will walk you through the following topics:
- different types of IP assets(patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade dresses, and trade secrets)and the different legal means for protecting them.
- the basics of the patenting process, non-disclosure agreements, open source and related licensing issues, and trade secrets.
- the basics of trademark law¾how to pick a good trademark, what you need to do to get your trademark registered.
- practical advice on steps to take in the event that you receive a cease-and-desist letter.
- what legal remedies are available to you when someone has misappropriated your IP assets.

In addition, as usual, there will be a prize drawing at the end of the seminar -- a free life time license for WebNotes software offered by our sponsor. Here is a brief description of the software:
WebNotes is an online highlighter and sticky note tool that allows anyone to take notes while performing internet research. WebNotes also allows the user to compile these notes along with bibliographic information into an aggregated report to send to clients or colleagues. Usage examples might include an attorney researching prior art for a patent case, or even a public relations firm compiling a media monitoring report for their clients.
