June, 2013

Dear Trojan Parents and Family Members,

With the end of the academic year, many students have returned home for the summer. Here are some helpful tips for parents to ease back into the routine of having your son or daughter at home:

  • Take time to get re-acquainted with your son or daughter. Acknowledge there may be possible differences in their lifestyle since they have been living away from home. Siblings at home may also need to adjust to their returning sibling and their new lifestyle.
  • Encourage your son or daughter to invite friends over or keep in touch with out-of-state friends over the summer on social media or texting.
  • Establish clear house rules on your expectations while your son or daughter is living under your roof. This includes house duties, options on keeping in touch, financial responsibilities and guest visits. Be aware that they may often see how far they can push your boundaries so communication is essential.

"The Chinese Dream: Local Realities and Global Implications"

Location: Duke University -University of North Carolina
Time: March 28-30, 2014

The Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit brings together top university students from across the U.S. to learn about and discuss issues pertinent to Sino-US relations. Last year, we were proud to host Thomas Fingar, chairman of National Intelligence Council; Thomas Christensen, Director of the Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program; and Yukon Huang, World Bank Country Director for China, as our keynote speakers. This year, we hope that you will join us for this year's conference on March 28th-30th. An opening banquet will be held at Duke on Friday, March 28th. Then on Saturday, speakers and students will gather at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School for lectures, seminars, leadership exercises, and networking. On Sunday, the event will conclude at Duke with an exciting line-up of speakers including David Shambaugh of Brookings Institute, Isaac Stone Fish of Foreign Policy, and David Wertime, co-founder of Tea Leaf Nation. This year's theme is "The Chinese Dream: Local Realities and Global Implications", which will help all of us to take an analytical look at the "Chinese Dream" and the goals of the new leadership of the CCP. The application for this year's conference is now available on our website www.dukeunccls.com and applications are due February 1st. The students who are accepted to attend the conference, our delegates, will be 50% from Duke and UNC and 50% from other universities。
