China California Heart Watch
China California Heart WatchChina Cal’s Internship Program Will End in December. New Chinese licensing laws will prevent us from hosting our student internship program in 2014. The new laws require all volunteers who come into contact with patients to have a license from China’s Health Department. Due to logistical constraints, it will not be possible for us to obtain licenses for our interns. Though we will still accept a few long-term volunteers next year, our regular monthly internship activities will have to be suspended indefinitely. As a result, the China California Heart Watch’s final internship program will take place in December of this year.

It is important to note that this change will have significant financial consequences for our organization. China Cal has depended on income from donations from families of interns to support our village doctor training programs, hypertension and heart disease research as well as some of our pediatric programs. So far, these donations have supported approximately 80% of China Cal’s operational budget. Because we will not have this source of income starting next year, your donations are all the more important. To help with our fundraising efforts, our Board of Directors will be initiating a massive fund raising program to sustain our activities for 2014. This will include outreach to myriad foundations and donors, as well as fundraising events in China and around the United States. We will need your help in this campaign—planning, getting the word out, and finding potential donors.

China Cal Is Helping More Pediatric Patients with Congenital Heart Defects. In 2013, China Cal has assisted 24 impoverished children with diagnostic, referral and financial support in order to cure their congenital heart defects. We plan on helping at least 50 more kids before the year is over. China Cal, these children, and their families wish to thank our donors and partner foundations for their extraordinary help.

China Cal Begins a Training Program for Doctors Regarding the Examination of Newborns. In collaboration of the Kunming Medical University Department of Public Health, the Kunming Children’s Hospital Neonatal Department, and the Hong He Prefecture Department of Health, China Cal will begin an evaluation and training program for doctors attending at the births of infants in Hong He Prefecture. A team of two physicians, one public health doctoral student, four foreign volunteer college students, and a nurse will visit 13 Hong He county hospitals in August to evaluate the proficiency of doctors in doing newborn examinations. In September, Professor Gao Jin of Kunming Children’s Hospital will train the doctors on proper neonatal evaluation. In October, the team will return to the same hospitals to evaluate the effectiveness of the training. This project is funded by a grant from the Edwards Life Sciences Foundation.

China California Heart WatchMusician Marc Yu Volunteered for China Cal. This summer, classical Carnegie Hall piano star Marc Yu joined the China Cal team in Yunlong County. Marc joined other volunteers, faculty and staff traveling to remote village schools where they listened carefully to schoolchildren’s hearts in order to detect the rhythmic swish swishes that doctors call heart murmurs. Marc assisted in recording medical histories, and, with the other student volunteers, shadowed professors and doctors who were seeking out children with heart disease whom they could help. The team advised parents regarding treatment programs, which include heart surgeries for their children. Among other accomplishments, China Cal can point to diagnostic and financial support of children’s’ heart surgeries—over 70 in 2012 and 24 so far this year. China Cal wishes to thank Marc Yu for lending a helping hand.

China Cal Partners with Two More Charitable Foundations. China Cal Administrative Director Shan Shan Chen and Medical Director Robert Detrano met last week with representatives of the
Western China Children’s Foundation and the Sohu Foundation. The West China Foundation has agreed to collaborate by paying up to 20,000 CNY for each child’s surgery when referred to contracted hospitals(i.e., the Cheng Du Military Hospital, Fu Wai Hospital, and An Zhen Hospital). Meanwhile, the Sohu Foundation will pay between 10,000 and 30,000 CNY per surgery. These important collaborations supplement collaborations with the Ai You Hua Xia Foundation and the Shen Hua Foundation, organizations that also cost share with China Cal.

These collaborative partnerships will expand our ability to help poor children with heart disease. However, partnerships assume that China Cal has funds to pay a percentage of each child’s surgery. This part of the funding depends on you, our individual donors. Please help us by donating now at
www.chinacal.org or by check to China California Heart Watch, 19 Mistral Lane, Irvine, CA, 92617.

The China Overseas Student Development Foundation Continues to Support China Cal. China Cal will continue to receive grant support from the China Overseas Student Development Foundation, according to an agreement signed by the two parties last October in Beijing. The funds(1,000,000 CNY per year for two years)will be used for pediatric heart care and training.

China Cal Chinese Blog Now Going Strong. China Cal volunteer Fei Shu has created and started posting on our new Chinese blog. Check it out now

China California Heart WatchPlease Donate Now. China Cal operates solely through the generosity and vision of donors, participants and YOU. Every donation helps tremendously and allows us to continue our efforts in saving lives, raising awareness about heart disease, and improving quality of life through our medical, research and education programs. In order to continue to deliver these excellent services, we must soon hire a cardiac nurse to help us with our clinical work. With your help, we can hire the staff we need and purchase better equipment. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Donors who make tax-deductible donations of $150 or more can receive a free copy of our 2012 photo book by mail(please request that a photo book be sent to you and send your mailing address to
robert@chinacal.org; we will pay shipping charges within the US and Canada). You can donate online at ChinaCal.org or on Global Giving or by check(payable to China California Heart Watch and mailed to Robert Detrano, China California Heart Watch, 19 Mistral Lane, Irvine, CA, 92617). *All donations are tax deductible
