Author Talk & Book Signing - The Chinese Art Book with Dr. Colin Mackenzie ~ September 24, 2013
For more than four millennia, dynasties rose and fell, capitals were abandoned and new ones built, and influxes of foreign populations contributed to the changing face of Chinese civilization and the creation of some of the world's most beautiful art. Recently, through the momentous struggles of the past century, China has emerged as an economic superpower – and its art is now more prominent than ever.
Colin Mackenzie, Senior Curator of Chinese Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, has partnered with Phaidon Press to create The Chinese Art Book, a visual encyclopedia of the art of the oldest continuous civilization on Earth through 300 works, from the earliest dynasties to the new generation of contemporary artists enlivening the global art world today. In this lecture, Dr. Mackenzie will examine Chinese art within the context of Chinese political and cultural history. More...

Film Screening and Author's Talk - Wang Renmei:The Wild Cat of Shanghai ~ September 21, 2013
The Renwen Society at China Institute will present a film screening and talk by Dr. Richard Meyer on Wang Renmei, a famous movie actress of the early 20th century, on September 21st. Prior to the founding of the PRC, Wang Renmei was on a fast track to becoming one of China's leading film stars. Her early films received magnificent praise by audiences and critics alike. The film, "Song of the Fishermen," in which she sang and played a major role, was the first Chinese motion picture to win an International Award in Moscow in 1935. The presentation will explore the era’s prevalent anti-feminist attitudes and feudal society that, along with her personal problems, the Anti-rightist Movement, and the Cultural Revolution, contributed to the downturn of Wang’s promising career and hospitalization for mental illness. Dr. Meyer's new book, Wang Renmei:The Wild Cat of Shanghai, was recently published by Hong Kong University Press. It will be available for sale and signing by the author at the event. More...
