Dear Trojan Parents and Family Members,

The 2013 school year is under way! The USC campus is still buzzing from Move-In Day, Welcome Week activities, sorority and fraternity recruitment and much more. If you are on campus, feel free to stop by our office in Student Union Suite #200 to say “hello” or ask questions.

Students are now settling into their daily routine. Here are some tips to help your student:

  • Parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with academic resources on campus. Give your student suggestions on how USC may be able to help and encourage them to follow through. Access the Center for Academic Support at http://sait.usc.edu/academicsupport/ for academic enrichment information.
  • Suggest involvement in one of USC’s many student organizations. Visit the Office of Student Activities at http://sait.usc.edu/ca/ to find out about student groups, upcoming programs and special events.
  • Remind your student about the value of exercise and a healthy diet. Access USC Recreational Sports to find out more about exercise facilities, intramural sports and other student activities at http://sait.usc.edu/Recsports/.
  • Suggest attending Visions and Voices events throughout the year to experience USC’s excellence in the arts and humanities. The series features presentations by critically acclaimed artists and distinguished speakers, film


Register for the First Parent Speaker Series event on Tuesday, September 17

All parents are invited to the Office for Parent Programs Speaker Series on Tuesday, September 17 at the Ronald Tutor Center Campus Ballroom on the USC campus. The parent social starts at 5:30pm with dinner following at 6pm. Professor John Monterosso, of the USC Department of Psychology will speak on “The Psychology of Happiness”. Parents also will receive university updates and have a chance to network with other parents.

Registration is $20 until Wednesday, September 11. After September 11, registration is $25. Discounted campus parking is available to parents who register by 5pm on Wednesday, September 11. To register, visit http://sait.usc.edu/parent/UpcomingEvents.asp.

The second Speakers Series program will be Tuesday, November 19 and will feature Dr. Najmedin Meshkati of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. Dr. Meshkati will discuss his research in the fields of safety and risk reduction in nuclear power, aviation, petrochemical and transportation industries, among other topics, including research done with USC students. The event will take place in The Forum Room(#450)at the Ronald Tutor Campus Center

There are many ways for parents to become involved in the USC community. Opportunities to volunteer on campus include Trojan Family Weekend, the Speaker Series, Homecoming and other events throughout the year. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Announcing the USC School of Dramatic Arts Parent Ambassadors
The USC School of Dramatic Arts(SDA)is pleased to announce new regional Parent Ambassadors who have generously committed to leadership roles for the School:Lauren & David Rush(Los Angeles), Teri & Byron Pollitt(San Francisco), Suzanne Bruce & Malcolm Waddell(Houston), Anne Helgen & Michael Gilligan(Boston)and Therese Rosenblatt & Marshall Sonenshine(New York).

With the goal of providing a supportive network for exchanging advice and ideas among parents, the SDA Parent Ambassadors program is designed to increase interaction and communication with SDA parents throughout the country. It also helps raise funds for the School’s programs such as the visiting artist series, scholarships and the production fund. SDA Parent Ambassadors will serve as regional advocates within their local SDA community,
offer peer-to-peer advice, engage with prospective SDA students and their parents and help build a culture of philanthropy within the School. USC South Asian Parent Circle Membership and Facebook page
The USC South Asian Parent Circle(SAPC)fosters an enriched sense of Trojan Family and community by enhancing parent and community involvement, sponsoring cultural events and activities and embracing the spirit of USC’s multicultural global community.

Geetika Walia, a member of SAPC, has taken the lead to develop the group through the USC Office for Parent Programs. USC home football games are a wonderful time for families to come together and see their student on campus while enjoying the exciting action of a USC football game. Many parents ask for information on how to get priority seating for the football season and the additional benefits associated with joining an athletic support group. Center for Women & Men Offers Educational Workshops and Support Groups for the Trojan Family
The Center for Women & Men(CWM)offers comprehensive programs to foster a respectful campus culture and help those in the Trojan family who have experienced dating violence, sexual harassment, stalking, sexual assault, or childhood sexual abuse. Through small-group discussions led by center staff, students learn about nurturing healthy relationships, appropriate intervention in problematic social situations and preventing sexual assault. Students interested in serving as peer resources can join a new program that trains students to help their friends and positively impact their communities. Male students also can receive training to serve as peer educators through the USC Men Care program. For survivors of sexual assault and other gender-related issues, the Center for Women & Men offers confidential one-on-one counseling and support groups for female and male survivors, as well as ones that address specific populations such as students with disabilities who are survivors of gender-based harm or military veterans who are survivors of gender-based harm. IT Services for USC Students
USC's Information Technology Services(ITS)provides a variety of services to support students in their learning, research, and other activities. Offerings include Google Apps at USC, a high-speed wireless network, a laptop loaner program at the ITS computing centers, MyUSC portal, the Blackboard online learning management system and Blackboard Mobile Learn, Lynda.com training tutorials, free antivirus and other software, and more. Graduating students are encouraged to book their yearbook photos soon. By scheduling a sitting time now, the portrait is free. To schedule an appointment, students can visit the Lauren Studios website, and use either their personal Client ID number(sent to them by mail)or the USC school password TROY2014. Extra photos may be purchased for holiday and graduation gifts. Also professional photos are offered for job applications and business profiles. 5th Annual USC Night at Dodger Stadium on September 10
Enjoy a beautiful evening at Chavez Ravine with your favorite Trojans and watch the hottest team in the Major League, as the Los Angeles Dodgers, take on the Arizona Diamondbacks at 7pm on Thursday, September 10. Tickets are $15 and should be purchased by Sunday, September 8. The tickets will be distributed on game day starting at 6pm near the Right Field Reserve Level entrance. Provost’s Writers Series Kicks Off September 12
The Provost’s Writers Series highlights the extraordinary talents of USC authors. Provost Elizabeth Garrett will host four evenings throughout the year featuring USC faculty who will read from and discuss their recent publications. The series provides opportunities for students and the community to engage with USC authors, learn about the incredible diversity of their work and celebrate the written word.

The 2013–14 Provost’s Writers Series will kick off Thursday, September 12 at 7pm with Jack Halberstam, a professor of American studies and ethnicity, gender studies and comparative literature at USC. Halberstam is the author of five books, including Skin Shows:Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters, Female Masculinity, In a Queer Time and Place and The Queer Art of Failure. His most recent book, Gaga Feminism:Sex, Gender and the End of Normal, attempts to make sense of the tectonic shifts that have transformed gender and sexual politics in the last few decades. Halberstam is currently working on a book called The Wild on queer anarchy. The event will be held at USC University Club at Kings Stoops Hall. Chuseok Harvest Moon Celebration on September 12
Chuseok is a major harvest festival in Korea celebrated over three days. The USC Korean Studies Institute will celebrate Chuseok on Thursday, September 12. Enjoy a live Korean drum performance by USC Haneulsori at 12:15pm at Tommy Trojan and free food and festivities starting at 1pm at the Dosan Ahn Chang Ho Family House on the USC campus. Spend the High Holy Days with USC Hillel September 13 - 14
USC Hillel invites students and all members of the USC community to celebrate the holidays with song and reflection, moving towards teshuva(repentance)for the new year. Services will be led by Rabbinic Intern Lenette Herzog with support from Cantorial soloist and USC senior Josh Goldberg. Welcome Reception for Fraternity Parents on September 16

Visions and Voices:Pre-Screening of Rescuing Ruben Salazar on September 19
Visions and Voices presents the pre-screening of PBS’s Ruben Salazar:Man in the Middle, a documentary by USC Annenberg Visiting Fellow Phillip Rodriguez at 6:30pm in the Annenberg Auditorium on the USC campus. Part political exposé, part narrative deconstruction, part poetic meditation, the film is the first independent and thorough investigation of Salazar’s life and death.

Following the screening, a panel featuring Rodriguez, Thomas A. Saenz(MALDEF Present and General Counsel)and George J. Sanchez(professor of American studies and ethnicity, and history at USC)will explore the producers’ investigative process and the quest for the release of records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Marshall Partners Rose Bowl Stadium Tour and Tailgate Party on September 26
The USC Marshall School of Business parents group, Marshall Partners, invites all Marshall parents and friends for a behind-the-scenes VIP tour of the newly refurbished Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena from 5pm to 8pm on Thursday, September 26. Recently the historic Rose Bowl underwent a $165 million facelift. The unrestricted access tour includes the new pavilion, press boxes, media center, locker rooms and more.

The evening will conclude with a classic Trojan tailgate party. Enjoy delicious fare from two of LA's best food trucks while reconnecting with Marshall alumni and Marshall Partners in the Court of Champions. Visions and Voices:Michael Frayn’s Tony Award–winning play Copenhagen on October 9
In a 1941 encounter in Copenhagen, physicists Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg exchanged heated words and profound ideas relating to the moral questions of scientists working on nuclear weapons. Michael Frayn’s Tony Award–winning play Copenhagen is a fictional account of that exchange. Ben Brantley of the New York Times called Copenhagen “endlessly fascinating...the most invigorating and ingenious play of ideas in many a year and a work of art that humanizes physics in a way no other has done.” Copenhagen will be presented at 7pm on Wednesday, October 9 at Joyce J. Cammilleri Hall at the Brain and Creativity Institute on the USC campus. The production is directed by Jack Rowe, director of the BFA program in acting and associate dean of the USC School of Dramatic Arts.

Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Wonderland Award in San Francisco on October 15
Enjoy a rare opportunity to view exhibits from the USC Doheny Library’s Lewis Carroll Collection, meet USC Libraries Dean Catherine Quinlan and see USC student submissions for The Wonderland Award on Tuesday, October 15 from 6pm – 8pm. USC’s Wonderland Award is an annual multidisciplinary competition that encourages scholarship and creative work related to author Lewis Carroll. The award was established in 2004 through the sponsorship of Linda and George Cassady, Trojans from the San Francisco Bay Area who donated the Lewis Carroll Collection to the library. Parents Invited to Interfraternity and Intersorority Parent Council Meetings
Parents are invited to attend the Joint USC Intersorority Parent Council(ISPC)and Interfraternity Parent Council(IFPC)meetings during the 2013-2014 academic year. The ISPC and the IFPC are organizations that consist of parents of sorority and fraternity members. The ISPC Board and IFPC Board work together to support USC sorority/fraternity parent clubs, provide positive public relations, award annual scholarships and organize joint meetings that are held at various sorority houses on “The Row.” The meetings are open to all parents and will be held on November 14, January 23 and March 27. The meetings include updates from sorority and fraternity chapter presidents, information from Beth Saul, assistant dean and director for Fraternity and Sorority Leadership Development and Parent Programs, and a featured speaker. USC President C. L. Max Nikias will be the featured speaker at the November 14 meeting(location to be announced). 从联想的历次"并购换市场"的收购轨迹来看,被谷歌吃干榨净的摩托罗拉并非一无是处,起码还剩了些骨头渣,拼成个马甲,去敲欧美市场的大门,但难度也绝非一般。据了解,摩托罗拉在美国以及全球智能手机的市场份额持续恶化,去年第三季度数据显示,在美国本土摩托罗拉市场份额不足7%。而且从早年间收购IBM(176.99, -0.26, -0.15%)的PC业务看,联想心里明白,收购美国企业距离打开美国市场的大门还差很远。
摩托罗拉的品牌影响力更是江河日下,在谷歌一轮又一轮的裁员中摩托罗拉的人才也早就所剩无几。虽然官方公告显示,联想在这次收购中共买到2000项移动领域相关专利,但相信谷歌绝不会轻易吐出到嘴的"肥肉"。
而且,要驾驭摩托罗拉也并非易事,29.1亿美元仅仅是入门价,真如联想立下的雄心壮志在2015年将摩托罗拉扭亏为盈,不知还要烧掉多少真金白银。
一切看上去似乎都不是那么美,宣布收购的发布会还没开完,联想的股东们便在二级市场上纷纷用脚投票。华尔街也看淡联想收购摩托罗拉手机业务,花旗报告指出,全球智能手机竞争激烈,认为收购摩托罗拉手机业务对联想盈利不构成利好因素。靠跨国并购做强做大的联想也非凡夫,老谋深算的联想之所以心甘情愿接过摩托罗拉这个烫手山芋,真正用意是靠住谷歌这颗大树。这宗交易的收购资金的安排上可见端倪。收购资本包括6.6亿美元现金和7.5亿美元联想普通股,余下的15亿美元将以三年期期票形式支付。
随着智能手机市场竞争日益激烈,苹果(525.87, 6.19, 1.19%)、微软(36.3, -0.26, -0.70%)、谷歌、三星等巨头们的专利混战早已进入白热化。何况他们在中国也做了大量的专利布局,中国国产品牌手机的专利风险日益突出。可见,联想是想傍上Android系统的带头大哥谷歌,在山雨欲来的专利战中,得到大哥庇护。在各方的精打细算中,摩托罗拉这个昔日的巨头已经彻底地沦为"鱼肉",无论是谁接手,其用意均不在其长远发展。中国经济时报
