The Chinese Art Book by Colin Mackenzie(9/24)

China Institute:CHINA IMPACT SPEAKER SERIES by Stephen Schwarzman(9/26 NY)

Author Talk & Book Signing

The Chinese Art Book

with Dr. Colin Mackenzie

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 ~ 6:30-8pm

China Institute, 125 East 65th Street, New York, NY 10065

For more than four millennia, dynasties rose and fell, capitals were abandoned and new ones built, and influxes of foreign populations contributed to the changing face of Chinese civilization and the creation of some of the world's most beautiful art. Recently, through the momentous struggles of the past century, China has emerged as an economic superpower − and its art is now more prominent than ever.

Colin Mackenzie, Senior Curator of Chinese Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, has partnered with Phaidon Press to create THE CHINESE ART BOOK, a visual encyclopedia of the oldest continuous civilization on Earth. It features 300 works from the earliest dynasties to the generation of contemporary artists enlivening the global art world today. In this lecture, Mackenzie will examine Chinese art within the context of Chinese political and cultural history, addressing such questions as:

  • How does contemporary Chinese art relate or not relate to the past?
  • What are the influences and interrelationships of traditional art forms?
  • What does the future hold for Chinese art in a global world?

Colin Mackenzie joined the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in 2009, having formerly held curatorial positions at the Yale University Art Gallery, the Asia Society Museum, and Middlebury College. He received his bachelor's degree and a doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and spent two years studying at Beijing University during the early 1980s. Dr. Mackenzie's interests range widely from ancient China to contemporary Chinese art. He has published on early Chinese art and archaeology and has contributed to a number of influential exhibitions, including The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology. He co-edited the catalogue Asian Games:the Art of Contest (Asia Society, 2004)and authored Masterworks of Chinese Art:The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (2011). His recent exhibition, Journey through Mountains and Rivers:Chinese Landscapes Ancient and Modern(2013), juxtaposed Song Dynasty(960-1279)paintings from the Nelson's collection with the monumental landscapes of Xu Longsen.

THE CHINESE ART BOOK

In 2012, according to the European Fine Art Foundation, China emerged as the largest art market in the world. Now, for the first time, Chinese art -- from the earliest dynasties through the most recent contemporary art being produced in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the West -- can be seen in a single, ground-breaking monograph:THE CHINESE ART BOOK(Phaidon Press, September 23, $59.95).

Each page of THE CHINESE ART BOOK features a full-color reproduction of a work of Chinese visual art, from painting, calligraphy, ceramics and bronzes, to contemporary installations, photography and performance art. The 300 entries, paired in unexpected and provocative ways, are accompanied by descriptions from specialists Colin Mackenzie, Katie Hill, Jeffrey Moser, and Keith Pratt. Only in THE CHINESE ART BOOK does a Shang Dynasty bronze appear juxtaposed next to a sculpture by contemporary artist Sui Jianguo, posing the question not only of how contemporary relates or does not relate to the past, but also what the future holds for Chinese art in a global world.

Contributors:

  • Katie Hill(contemporary art after 1949)is Director of the Office of Contemporary Chinese Art, and Course Leader for Contemporary Chinese Art at Sotheby's Institute of Art.
  • Colin Mackenzie(Introduction)is Senior Curator of Chinese Art at the Nelson-Akins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri.
  • Jeffrey Moser(plastic arts to 1949)is Assistant Professor of East Asian Art History at McGill University, Montreal.
  • Keith Pratt(painting and calligraphy to 1949)is Emeritus Professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Durham.
