USC Office for Parents Program UPDATE(February 2014)

Dear Trojan Parents and Family Members,

    The semester is now in full swing! There are many events and important dates for parents and students throughout the spring semester, so be sure to visit  www.usc.edu/parent for up-to-date information.

News from the Office for Parent Programs:

Cheer on the Trojans at the USC Parent Basketball Event on March 1
     Join fellow parents and family members at the annual Parents Basketball event starting at 11am on Saturday, March 1 in the Vineyard Room at the Davidson Conference Center. Registration is $50 which includes lunch, entertainment by the Trojan Marching Band, a raffle and a ticket to the men’s basketball game at 1pm against the Oregon Ducks. Students are welcome to attend. Deadline to register is Friday, February 21. Register at http://sait.usc.edu/parent/UpcomingEvents.asp.

Nominate Faculty for the Steven B. Sample Teaching & Mentoring Awards
     The nomination form for the 2014-2015 Steven B. Sample Teaching and Mentoring Award is 
     available at http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/parents/tma.html. The deadline to submit a nomination is Wednesday, April 9. These awards, a signature program of the USC Parents Association, are the only faculty recognition awards initiated by parent nominations and comments by their students. Faculty recipients receive a $1,000 honorarium, recognition in the Trojan Parent Perspective e-newsletter and their name inscribed on a plaque at the University Club. Is your company or business seeking qualified and talented summer interns?
     Exclusive to USC Dornsife students, the unique summer Gateway Program combines a paid internship with a USC academic program and mentorship. Each student is paired with a distinguished professional or USC Dornsife faculty member and enrolled in a customized multi-disciplinary activities(one unit summer course with USC Dornsife faculty)course to enhance the paid internship experience through guest speakers, collaborations with fellow students and personal reflection. USC Summer Programs for High School Students – Live the Trojan Experience!
USC Summer Programs offers two and four week college immersion programs for high school students. Courses are taught by USC faculty and members of the academic community. Students engage in the university experience through a combination of lectures, hands-on workshops and labs, guest speakers and academic field trips to locations throughout Los Angeles. Students receive three units of USC elective credit upon successful completion of the four week course. For more information, visit http://summer.usc.edu/parent.

Information on Trojan Athletic Fund and 2014 USC Football Season Tickets
     USC home football games are a wonderful time for families to come together and visit their student on campus while taking in the exciting action of a USC football game. Many parents ask for information on how to get priority seating for the season and the additional benefits associated with an athletic membership. Contact the USC Ticket Office for season tickets and for those wishing to discuss opportunities to upgrade seats, contact USC Athletics at 213.740.4155 or visit www.trojanathleticfund.com.

Interested in Becoming a Parent Volunteer?
     There are many ways for parents to become involved in the USC community. Opportunities to volunteer on campus include the Speaker Series, Trojan Family Weekend and other events throughout the year. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Mark Your Calendar for Upcoming Career Center Events

Grad Fair Will Be Held February 11-13
     The 2014 Grad Fair will be held on February 11-13 in the Tutor Campus Center Grand Ballroom. This is the one-stop shop for all commencement-related items. Last year, approximately 5,000 students and parents attended this three day event. Parents and students are encouraged to attend because the commencement packages will be offered at a discounted rate only for the three days of the Grad Fair.

     At the Grad Fair, students can rent caps and gowns, purchase class rings, announcements, sashes, diploma frames and leis. A popular option at this year’s Grad Fair includes a photo studio for parents and/or friends to take a picture with their student in caps and gowns. Also available will be commencement packages for advanced degree graduates. The El Rodeo Yearbook, Lauren Studios, USC Alumni Association, Dornsife, Annenberg, Marshall and Viterbi representatives, as well as the USC Credit Union and the Radisson Hotel will be in attendance.

Learning Enrichment Workshops Provided at the Center for Academic Support
     Learning Enrichment Workshops are available at the Center for Academic Support. The schedule is as follows:“Power Reading”(February 12), “Writing Papers” (February 19), “Thinking Sills in Problem Solving”(February 26), “Test-Taking Anxiety”(March 5)and “Exam-Taking Strategies”(March 12). All workshops will be held from 3pm - 4pm in Student Union #311. For more information, visit www.usc.edu/cas.

Registration Opens For A Birthright Trip to Israel
     Registration for Taglit-Birthright Israel opens at 7am on Wednesday, February 19. This free 10- day trip is available to Jewish college students. The first 40 USC students are guaranteed a spot. USC Housing Renewal information available online
     Although the online application deadline for USC Housing renewal was in January, there are several important dates for USC Housing for students to follow-up on. For more information on 2014-2015 USC Housing renewal process visit http://housing.usc.edu/index.php/renewal-procedures/.
                     
USC Pacific Asia Museum Offers Free Admission to Students
     The USC Pacific Asia Museum(USC PAM)in Pasadena offers free admission(with current USC ID card)to all students, faculty and staff. Several exhibitions are on display including The Art of Pacific Asia, The Arts of Korea, and The Arts of China. Ralli Quilts:Contemporary Textiles from Pakistan will be open until March 2. The museum also announced a new exhibit entitled The Other Side:Chinese and Mexican Immigration to America. The USC Pacific Asia Museum also offers lectures, classes(including yoga, Tai Chi and calligraphy), performances and  special events to museum members.  Special reduced student memberships are available.
