ABOUT THE DISTRICT
The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District(GLACVCD)is a non-enterprise, independent, special district, enabled and empowered to act as a public health agency as a result of legislation incorporated in the California State Health and Safety Code. GLACVCD is one of five mosquito and vector control districts in Los Angeles County. The District serves approximately 6 million residents in a 1,330 square mile area, making GLACVCD the largest vector control district in Los Angeles County.
JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision of the Director of Community Affairs, and assigned supervision of the Public Information Officer and Education Program Coordinators, the Outreach Assistant(OA)performs a variety of clerical, administrative support, and outreach-related activities that specifically assist the Director of Community Affairs in the daily function of the District’s education and information programs. Other duties as assigned.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal incumbent possess experience in data entry, filing, maintaining educational equipment and brochure inventories, assisting with information booths at community events, and providing other general office support. Additional duties may include graphics design and editing, curriculum development, and development of education and outreach materials. Incumbent most possess general clerical-data processing duties; electronic computerized record-keeping of data associated with the District’s public information and education programs, performs clerical work using both manual typewriter or computer word processing to produce a variety of documents and correspondence, including spreadsheets, memos, letters, envelopes, forms and reports associated with the District’s mosquito control and outreach programs; and answering of phone calls, as needed. Skills in mathematical computations in furtherance of assigned tasks; the ability to perform standard computer data-processing duties associated with industry-wide word processing, spreadsheet, database applications using a PC with a MS Windows®-based platform; and excellent public and media relations skills. Ability to maintain a standard paper filing system related to any written or transcribed data which is collected or processed and associated with the District’s outreach programs; work congenially and cooperatively with others; assists with coordinating, setting-up, and staffing information booths at community events including those on evenings and weekends outside of regular work hours; learn communications, public health, and vector control concepts and terminology; place orders, stock, and maintain inventory of office supplies, brochures, and outreach materials; help maintain educational equipment and material including preparation of insect boxes and caring for live insects and fish; willingness to assist with field outreach and
operational campaigns including mosquito surveillance campaigns in district neighborhoods.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite(Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop).
The incumbent must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent AND one(1)year of clerical/administrative, or public relations, or communications experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience in public or private education environment.
