General Statement

Cañada College seeks employees who value working in a collegial, collaborative environment, guided by a commitment to helping all students achieve success. Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include the following:

1. Teach a variety of Kinesiology(fitness)activity and lecture courses

2. Serve as Head Women’s Soccer Coach, including the duties of recruitment and retention of student athletes, organization of schedules and practices, oversight of the soccer budget, coordination of transportation for away games, direction of conditioning program, and motivation of student athletes to achieve academic success

3. Develop curriculum and modes of instruction in Kinesiology

4. Comply with California Community College Athletics Association constitution, which governs intercollegiate athletics for California community colleges

5. Attend Coast Conference, CCCSCA, and CCCAA annual meetings

6. Direct public relations and fundraising activities in support of the Women’s Soccer program and the athletic program in general

7. Establish relationships with San Mateo County high school coaches, media, and businesses

8. Establish and maintain linkages with other college departments to assist in the coordination of each student’s academic program and with four-year institutions to assist in the transfer of student athletes

9. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment and technology that will enhance offerings in the department

10. Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies

11. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours

12. Serve as a member of division and college committees

13. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs

The college offers day, evening, and weekend classes, and faculty may be required to teach during any of these.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master’s degree in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education OR Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND Master’s degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy OR the equivalent

2. Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

3. Ability to obtain a California Driver’s License

4. Current CPR/First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain certification before assignment begins

Physical Requirements
Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications

Please note that equivalency determination is based solely upon the screening committee’s review of the applicant’s transcripts. The equivalency application form and conclusive evidence to support the request for equivalence must be uploaded as part of your application package to be considered. Failure to do so may result in disqualification of your application. Equivalence requests can be in one of the following areas:

Degree Equivalence:Possession of a degree(s)with similar content to those listed in the job announcement. Transcripts required.
Academic Background Equivalence:Meet all of the requirements for minimum qualifications in an allied field, and twenty-four(24)semester units of both upper division and graduate work in the academic field specified in the job announcement. Transcripts required.
Professional Achievement Equivalence:Outstanding professional achievement or substantial training in the field specified in the job announcement. Preparation, experience, and ability must be equivalent to those expected from a candidate who meets minimum qualifications. Supporting documentation may include official transcripts, credentials, licenses, certificates, employer attestations, publications, or other relevant materials.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:

Subject matter preparation:
Preference will be given to candidates who:
1. Have certification of an A or B license through the U.S. Soccer Federation or certification through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America

2. Have recent successful experience coaching a college, professional, or high school soccer program

3. Have experience in teaching experience, or ability to teach, in a varied kinesiology(physical education)program

Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher:
In addition to a short classroom lecture or lab demonstration that will be part of the interview process, appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement that the candidate has:

4. An understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of this community college

5. A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for supporting departmental and college missions

6. The ability to assess students’ achievement of student learning outcomes

7. The ability to motivate students to develop critical thinking skills

8. The ability to organize, demonstrate and explain materials which correspond with students’ abilities, levels of preparation, and learning styles

9. The ability to use teaching methods that encourage students to become active learners

10. Knowledge of current theories and teaching methods, especially in a culturally diverse student population

11. Commitment to remaining current with the latest developments in the discipline

12. The ability to establish close relationships with local high school soccer programs

Evidence of effectiveness as a colleague:
13. The ability and desire to work collaboratively with other teachers to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success

14. Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division and college activities

Faculty Benefits

Conditions of Employment

Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:
1. Submit official transcripts(applies to all faculty or educational administrative positions)

3. Satisfactory references
4. Successfully being cleared for employment through the background checking process
5. Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States
6. Approval of your employment by the SMCCCD Board of Trustees
7. Provide a certificate of Tuberculosis exam for initial employment.
8. Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer(Clearance must be received prior to first day of employment). Please note that the California Education Code requires, in part, that community college districts shall not employ or retain in employment persons in public school service who have been convicted of certain felonies, a misdemeanor drug charge(including alcohol offenses)or misdemeanor moral turpitude(sexual offense)crime. However, consideration may be given to those whose drug convictions occurred more than five years ago. A conviction for other crimes may not necessarily disqualify you from the job for which you may be applying.
