The University Library and the College of Extended University, Cal Poly Pomona, are jointly hosting an event featuring poet Shu Ting, arguably the most important modern poet to date in China.

Shu Ting was the lead poet during the misty poems phenomenon, an underground literary movement toward the end of the Cultural Revolution, China’s Dark Age. She began to write poetry in 1969 and her work was published in several literary magazines, including the leading underground literary journal Jīntiān （Today）. In the early 1980s, she achieved prominence by her first collection, Shuangwei Chuan（The Boat with Double Sails）published in 1982, and did a joint collection with the late poet Gu Cheng, another literary giant of the time. For a long time she was the most quoted poet on university campuses in China. Shu Ting is now president of the literary association of Fu Jian Province.

Renowned Chinese Poet to Speak at University Library

Shu Ting, one of the most important modern poets in China, will speak at University Library Sunday, May 17.

Shu Ting, considered one of the most important modern poets in China, will speak at Cal Poly Pomona.

The University Library and the College of the Extended University will co-host the event, which is set for Sunday, May 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the University Library’s fourth floor Special Events Room.

Shu Ting led the Misty Poets, an underground literary group that challenged restrictions on art during China’s Cultural Revolution.

She began writing poetry in 1969, and her work has been published in several literary magazines, including the noted underground journal Jīntiān（Today）. She released her first collection of poetry in 1982 titled “Shuangwei Chuan”（“The Boat with Double Sails”）, and composed a joint collection with the late poet Gu Cheng, another literary giant of the time.

Shu Ting, who serves as president of the literary association of Fujian Province, was the most quoted poet on university campuses in China for decades.
