Despite the Crash, the Next Silicon Valley is in China
A spectre is haunting Silicon Valley - the spectre of a Silicon Dragon. These may be tough times for the Chinese economy, the tech city of Shenzhen is playing its fiddle as Rome burns to the ground.
Dubbed "Black Monday", August 24th ended with Chinese equities down 8.5%, wiping out hundreds of billions of dollars in market capitalisation. The Shenzhen market, often compared to America's Nasdaq index, is down 41% since June 12th. These are dizzying figures.
Only a few weeks ago, analysts discussed how the technical hub had threatened to dethrone Silicon Valley from its comfortable perch as global tech-Mecca. Forecasts are now less optimistic.
Yet, the Communist Party's response to the consequent month-long crisis has been swift and forceful. On top of spending almost $235 billion to buy shares and shore up prices, the Party imposed a range of impromptu restrictions on the sale of stocks. Amidst stock meltdown, Shenzhen has remained sanguine, backed by this strong government response. Should the Valley worry?

Rusted-out Shenzhen factory reborn as a thriving urban farm
When architect Thomas Chung Wang-leung wanted to present an alternative use for yet another Hong Kong institution destined for urban renewal - in this case, the 160-year-old Graham Street wet market in Central - he did so not in Hong Kong, but across the border in Shenzhen.
Specifically, it was the former Guangdong Glass Factory in Shekou that provided the model, courtesy of the invitation-only Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture held there in 2013.
Chung's vision for Value Farm - a living, breathing, productive farm that engaged the community for months on end and provided food for their tables - recently won gold in the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Cross-Strait Architectural Design Awards 2015.
Chung is an associate professor at the school of architecture at Chinese University.
"When [curator] Ole Bouman invited me to do something to showcase Hong Kong, we thought urban farming might be a little unexpected. Compared to the [usual scenes of] Victoria Harbour, high-rises, and glamour, this might be something new Hong Kong could offer to the world," Chung said.

Berdych Claims Shenzhen Title
Top seed Tomas Berdych captured his 11th ATP World Tour title on Monday as he prevailed 6-3, 7-6(7)over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in a rain-delayed Shenzhen Open final.
Having only completed the semi-finals on Sunday due to heavy rain throughout the weekend in Shenzhen, the final was put back to Monday and endured one rain interruption before Berdych finally clinched victory in one hour and 48 minutes.
"The last three days were tough, especially mentally to keep being very focused," said Berdych. "I was the one who dealed with that the best. I'm proud of myself to make it happen, because these conditions were not easy at all."
Victory marks the Czech’s first ATP World Tour title of the season and sees him further cement his place at fifth in the Emirates ATP Race To London. Berdych is next in line to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, where he would join Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka on his sixth straight appearance at the season finale in London.
