Big Data in Information Systems:Characteristics, Applications, and Preliminary Findings of a Meta-Analysis
Presented by Dr. Tao(Eric) Hu
Assistant Professor of Information System, CSUN
Time:11-12.30 PM, May 10th, Friday
Location:Sierra Tower 503, Philosophy Conference Room. CSUN
Abstract:The presentation starts with an overview of Big Data characteristics and major techniques and applications of data analysis. Then, based on an extensive literature review and meta-analysis of 145 articles published in the “Senior Scholars” list of the eight information systems (IS) focused academic journals over the period of 2000-2017, the presentation reports the preliminary findings of topics and methodologies of Big Data research in the IS field. The meta-analysis compares research methodologies applied and topic areas investigated, and identifies the emerging research trends. Then, a research framework of Big Data is proposed to synthesize and aid in theoretical perspectives and empirical studies of the Big Data research in the IS field. Research opportunities, implications, challenges and limitations with the Big Data research are discussed.

Comparison of China-US science and Technology
Grant Management
Presented by Dr. Lina Guo

Associate Professor of Beijing Normal University

Abstract:Science and technological advancements have been the largest drivers of economic growth in the last several decades both in China and in the United States of America, and as a result science and technology policy is an important issue for both countries. In the past three years, China's scientific research fund management has undergone in-depth reforms aiming to optimize scientific research management procedures and improve research performance. In 2017, American Innovation and Competitiveness Act was enacted by US federal government to reduce administrative burdens on research by federally funded researchers and to protect the public interest. China and the United States have almost the same goals in this field, but because of their different contexts and foundations, there are many differences in policy making. From the perspectives of grant application, procedure management, risk and performance management, and database construction, we will analyze the differences between the two countries and draw some policy implications.
