On October 3, 2020, the UCLA community lost a beloved colleague, scholar, teacher, and mentor; Professor James Tong. Professor Tong was a specialist in Chinese political science and the author of the influential books Disorder Under Heaven:Collective Violence in the Ming Dynasty and Revenge of the Forbidden City:The Suppression of the Falungong in China, 1999–2005; he was also the editor of the journal Chinese Law and Government. Professor Tong devoted 31 years of his professional life to UCLA during which time he had a major impact on the field of Chinese politics and changed countless students’ lives.
On April 8, 2021, on what would have been Professor Tong’s 74th birthday, we will host an online Celebration of his Life and Legacy where members of the UCLA community, including colleagues and students, will be joined by members of Professor Tong’s family and long-time personal friends. The forum will be an opportunity for those close to Professor Tong to share photos, memories, and stories.
We invite you to join us online to share your memories of Professor Tong; to come together to reflect and mourn, but also to celebrate the many gifts that he left us with.
Moderated by Michael Berry and Yunxiang Yan.
