China Cal Village Doctor Training Program in Pu Er Prefecture. This past October, China Cal volunteers held a training for over 100 village doctors in the counties of Xi Meng and Meng Lian in Pu Er prefecture, Yunnan Province. During the session, trainees were taught how to diagnose and treat high blood pressure. Village doctors in China currently receive only three months of medical training after high school, and the treatment of chronic diseases, like high blood pressure, is rarely included in the curriculum. Our students are now better provided with the tools they need to manage their patients with high blood pressure. We thank the volunteer doctors from Saint Johns and Third Peoples Hospital of Kunming and the Bless China International NGO.
Children that need your help. Thisyear, China Cal has already saved the lives of 20 children with heart defects by providing diagnostic and financial support. Little Li and little Hu are two children with serious heart defects. Little Li has a blockage in one of his heart valves and Little Hu has a large opening between his ventricles. Surgery is available for both children in Beijing hospitals, but their families are unable to afford them and can only pay part of the cost. A $2000 donation is enough to save the lives of one of these children. Donate at www.chinacal.org. Donations are tax deductible.
China Cal Doctor Publishes Research Report. China Cal research fellow Jie Huang MD has written a research report on high blood pressure among Yunnan farmers. The report has been accepted for publication in the American Journal of Hypertension. Dr. Huang found that farmers who live farther from town centers tend to have lower blood pressure. His findings support the idea that urbanization is responsible for the exploding epidemic of high blood pressure in rural China. Other authors of the publication include Professors Hu Da Yi, Yu Jin Ming, Huang Ying, Stanley Azen and Li Yi. This is China Cal’s second peer reviewed publication.
Hu Da Yi Elected as China Cal Board President. The China Cal Board of Directors met in early October and elected Professor Hu Da Yi as the new board president and Dr. Zhuang Nan as the new vice president. Professor Hu replaces Professor Robert Detrano who will continue as Clinical and Program Director. Professor Hu is the Chief of Cardiology at Peoples Hospital of Peking University. Welcome President Hu Da Yi.
Please Donate Now China Cal operates solely through the generosity and vision of donors, participants and YOU. Every donation helps tremendously and allows us to continue our efforts in saving lives, raising awareness about heart disease, and improving quality of life through our medical, research and education programs. In order to continue and improve our work, we must soon hire an expert pediatric cardiologist to help us with diagnostic assessments. With your help, we can purchase better equipment and hire the staff we need. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
