Recently returned from a unique professional internship in China, Michael Vanderbeek was chosen by the American Association of Port Authorities for a hands-on work experience at several Chinese ports, including the astonishing Port of Qingdao. This port has recently earned a berth as the world’s 10th largest. Long known as the “vacation-spot of China” where Beijing’s powerful bureaucrats lolled on the beach, Qingdao completely revamped its waterfront to host the Sailing Competition of the 2008 Olympics. Today, instead of a sleepy Shangri-La, Vanderbeek found a thriving hub of cargo vessels, passenger service, and the Chinese Navy. At the Olympic Sailing Center, newly trained sailors enjoy their shiny new yachts, no doubt bought with profits from newly privatized export companies.
How has this transformation been so quickly accomplished? Are Qingdao residents suffering from the mirror image of our environmental fallout from the growth of shipping? Will their demands for less pollution and smarter land use cause a slowdown in port development? Hear Michael Vanderbeek discuss these important issues as he shares photos and impressions of his recent sojourn in China.
