Job Opening: China Cal, a successful not-for-profit charity, is looking for new leadership for its internship program. --Robert Detrano, MD, PhD, China Cal Director.
The China Cal interns are American and other medical, public health and undergraduate students. They have assisted in the screening of tens of thousands of rural school children, treated tens of thousands of hypertension and heart disease sufferers and helped over 60 children undergo needed surgery for heart defects. The internships have resulted in four peer reviewed international scientific publications regarding hypertension and heart disease in rural Yunnan province. This very successful program brings young American and Chinese trainees together to help people in need. Student interns provide labor to assist in clinical care and research. Their families provide more than 80% of China Cal funding for our programs.
However, to continue these accomplishments, we will need new leadership.
China Cal administrative coordinator Shan Shan Chen and I have led this program for the past three years. We wish to continue directing the internship program; however, we need immediate and reliable assistance from an associate director. Otherwise we will be forced to abandon the program next year.
If you are a physician, fluent in Chinese and English, and are interested in finding out more about this opportunity which will require working full time in rural Yunnan as a volunteer with all expenses paid, please send a message and CV to me at robert@chinacal.org.
Diabetes Research Survey Begins. China Cal interns Linh Nguyen, Sophy Zhang, Shireen Khaliffe and Chris Hearne(shown at right)have taken the lead in a survey of diabetes among Yunnan farmers. Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke in rural China and throughout the world. Though the prevalence of diabetes in rural China is stil quite low, it is increasing rapidly. We hope that by studying factors related to diabetes in rural Yunnan, we can learn how to prevent this disease and its complications. The research was made possible by a grant from Professor Huo Yong of Peking University.
ChinaCal thanks Prof. Basil Chang and Prof. Renli Qiao. Basil Chang DO is an internist at a University of Nevada affiliate hospital. Dr. Chang learned about China Cal through the Internet and volunteered two months of his time and a lot of effort to help teach local rural doctors, train student interns, and care for the poor people of rural Yunnan.
Renli Qiao MD is a specialist in critical care and respiratory diseases at the University of Southern California. For the second time in two years, Dr. Qiao has volunteered his time and skills to help us with teaching and clinical care. We thank these two compassionate and skilled physicians for their assistance.
We are always eager to welcome foreign expert volunteers to assist us in our work.
Please Donate Now China Cal operates solely through the generosity and vision of donors, participants and YOU. Every donation helps tremendously and allows us to continue our efforts in saving lives, raising awareness about heart disease, and improving quality of life through our medical, research and education programs. In order to continue and improve our work, we must soon hire a cardiac nurse to help us with our clinical work. With your help, we can purchase better equipment and hire the staff we need. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
