Overview

In the past decade, the worldwide IT community has witnessed the tremendous growth rate and incredible opportunities in the China IT industry. The success stories of the China IT companies are continuing to inspire generations of IT professionals around the world, especially those who have their culture and background deeply rooted in China.

In this NECINA conference, we focus on providing first-hand perspectives of planning, launching and scaling high-tech startups in China. The topics of discussion will include but are not limited to the following:

  • How does the IT industry in China compare to that in US, in terms of innovation focuses, business models, and financing options?
  • What are the unique advantages of starting a company in China?
  • What are the resources available from the Chinese public and private sectors that can be leveraged by IT start-ups in China?

In the talk sessions, we invite experienced entrepreneurs with knowledge in both US and China IT industry to share their past war stories as well as future outlooks. In the panel discussion, the audience will be able to engage with the speakers and discuss various aspects of China IT. This conference also provides excellent networking opportunities for the speakers and the audience to develop and extend business relationship, as well as pursuing career opportunities in China.

Talk #1:Trends and Best Practices in VC-based China Start-ups

Abstract:

What types of business are attractive to China-based VCs? How to effective raise money in China? What are the pitfalls and misconceptions to avoid? From a VC angle, this talk will cover the trends and best practices in the funding raising and execution of China-based start-ups, as well as a few concrete case studies on some of the recently funded companies.

Speaker bio:

Mr. Xiaojun Li is actively involved in investments in mobile, internet, technology and energy sectors with engineering, management and entrepreneur experience in the technology industry. As a key member of the technology team in both Broadcom Corporation(NASDAQ BRCM)and Marvell Semiconductor(NASDAQ:MRVL), Xiaojun led the designing team in the development of several chips. Previously, he also worked with Airvana Networks where he was responsible for the business development in the Great China area. In 2001, Xiaojun co-founded Silicon Craft, a company providing IC design consulting services. Xiaojun received his M.B.A from the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA and a B.S. in Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China.

Talk #2:Running a start-up in China

The talk will cover the following topics:

(1)Advantages and challenges of running a start-up in China
(2)How the differences of policy and law between China and US, e.g. platform responsibilities, credibility and censorship, impact start-up in China?
(3)Cost of starting a company in China:per head cost, insurance, tax and Labor law etc
(4)Roles of Science and Technology Park, grants and relationship with Chinese government

Speaker bio:

In June 2010, Dr. Jun Chang founded Eventdove.com(HyZing LLC)in Nanjing, China. In just a year and half, she built an incredibly strong team with its own culture and style, and a great product with innovations in both its technology and business model. In this event, she will share her personal experiences and knowledge on start-ups and doing business in China, as well as her professional relationship with the Chinese government.

Talk #3:Riding the Waves of Globalization:The Evolution of China's IT Service Industry

The IT Services is a young and fast growing industry in China. It is also referred to as the outsourcing industry. Through a decade of development, the industry has evolved from almost nothing to a $20 billion dollar business, its service providers grew from small local project contracting, body shopping firms to the professional service providers with over 10,000 employees, global footprint, and full services to meet the needs of consulting, IT and business operations. China has risen as a competitive IT services destination second only to India. The second decade of China's IT service industry will witness a major transformation:the appearance of real global services providers that can compete squarely with the leading IT services companies such as IBM, Accenture, TCS and InfoSys.

Speaker bio:

Executive Vice President, Head of GADS Business Group
Mr. John Peng is an Executive Vice President of iSoftStone. He is the Head of Global Account Delivery Services(GADS)Business Group. Mr. Peng is a seasoned executive with over 25 years of experience in IT services, offshore outsourcing management, and business development.

Before joining iSoftStone, Mr. Peng was the VP of China Technology Delivery of E5 Systems Inc., one of the first US IT consulting and services firms with an offshore outsourcing center in China. Mr. Peng started and managed the company's China Development Center and project delivery to US clients.

Prior to E5 Systems, Mr. Peng held several senior management positions as Engineering VP, or Director of Software Development in several software development companies in the US, where he led the product development and maintenance. Mr. Peng has also worked in major financial service companies such as John Hancock Funds and Mellon Financial Corp as a senior system and business analyst.

Mr. Peng holds an MBA from The University of Rhode Island, a MS from the Institute of Science and Technology, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Beijing University of Technology.

Bio:

Co-Founder of Beijing Shandong technologies(www.dopool.com

Ruixi Yuan conducts research on network communications and social media at Tsinghua University. He is also a co-founder of Beijing Shandong technologies(www.dopool.com), the largest mobile TV service provider in China. Shandong Technologies' "Dopool" mobile TV platform hosts ~ 300 live TV channels,  and has ~18 million users.
