This program is designed to teach the general principles of translation, understood not as a theory, but as a practical way of coping with the choices a translator will make. The workshop is open to students and professionals working in any scholarly discipline with an advanced reading knowledge of Chinese and English. The goal is to teach participants to render scholarly texts in their fields from Chinese into English or English into Chinese. Participants will translate texts of their own choosing relevant to their research interests.

About the Workshop

The workshop will take place on the campus of Fudan Univeristy. Two language tracks will be offered:Chinese to English translation, and English to Chinese translation. For 2012 the Chinese to English course will be led by Professor Ted Huters. The English to Chinese track will be led by Professor Deng Zhenglai(邓正来), Director of the National Institute for Advanced Study on Social Sciences at Fudan University(IAS-Fudan). Admission to the Chinese to English track will be overseen by UCLA. Students interested in the English to Chinese track should view Fudan University's web site .

Participants will enroll in the track that allows them to translate texts into their native language(i.e., native English speakers will enroll in the Chinese to English taught by UCLA). During the workshop, participants may audit the other language track, as well as attend specially arranged talks by professionals and scholars and participate in off-campus excursions.

Each week, program participants will attend two three-hour workshop sessions where they will present their translations for discussion with their classmates. Participants in the Chinese to English track will be enrolled in the UCLA graduate-level class Comparative Literature 286 and receive four units of academic credit*.

*Please note that UCLA operates on the quarter system, rather than the semester system.

Enrollment

Interested participants must complete an online application and submit the following supporting documentation:

  • Photocopy of the Chinese text you wish to translate(an article or book chapter of 10 - 15 pages)
  • Translation into English of three pages of the above text
  • One-page curriculum vitae, including a list of language courses and content courses relative to the text submitted
  • Statement of Purpose outlining the applicants' interests and past training in both the language applied for and other languages
  • Two Emails of Support:one from an academic professor or professional colleague, most closely acquainted with their scholarly work, and one from their most recent language instructor.

Please download and complete the attached Email of Support Form and present it to your referees. The deadline to apply for this program is May 1st.

Financial Aid

Chinese to English track participants will be enrolled in UCLA Comparative Literature 286 free of charge.

The UCLA Confucius Institute will cover the cost of housing at Fudan University and partial international airfare for participants.
