Locating the Sacred Festival ~ September 12-23, 2012
This vibrant, innovative, and deeply meaningful series of programs was inspired by the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and the national rancor that broke out over Park51, the "Ground Zero Mosque." Asian American Arts Alliance has been providing a public stage, in collaboration with other community organizations, on which Asian American artists could contribute to the critical conversation regarding what constitutes the sacred in our complex urban environment. Two of the programs in this festival are organized by and feature artists who premiered their works at China Institute -- the installation artist Chang-Jin Lee, whose award-winning work "Comfort Women Wanted" has received international acclaim and was a speaker for our Women Activists in the Arts symposium in 2011, and Amir ElSaffar, a world renowned maqam musician whose ensemble gave a sold-out concert "East meets Middle East" in our Library in April of this year.
