**** China Cal Awarded Two Million Yuan from Chinese Overseas Students Development Foundation.****The Chinese Overseas Students Development Foundation(COSDF)is awarding a grant of two million yuan to the China California Heart Watch in order to develop its program for prevention and treatment of congenital heart diseases. The award ceremony will occur on October 29 in Beijing office of the European American Classmates Organization. China Cal administrative director Shan Shan Chen and director Robert Detrano will receive the award on behalf of our organization.China Cal Launches Photo Book. Get yours now. We sincerely thank our volunteer staff for making the China California Heart Watch photo book a reality. The book is hardcover, 60 pages, 133 photos. The photos were taken by China Cal doctors, interns, and volunteers between 2006 and 2012, and are arranged by geographical region. They reflect the striking beauty of the landscape, the cultural diversity of Yunnan’s communities, and the unfailing dedication of China Cal’s volunteers and collaborators. The book was edited by volunteers:Cameron Jean Shaw and Zephyr Detrano. Thank you for your dedication in helping rural Yunnan become a heart healthy region.
Starting on October 15th, donors who make tax-deductible donations of $150 or more can receive a free copy of the book by mail.
Renli Qiao MD, Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, is our new vice director for research. Professor Qiao has spent over two months in Yunnan helping the China Cal team collect esearch data and teaching local doctors about heart and lung disease. Professor Qiao has already obtained a grant for China Cal for $7500 from the American College of Chest Physicians. To prevent this tragedy, heart screening should be done both at birth and within the first year of life. China Cal is working with the Yunnan Province government to developtraining programs for village doctors so that all rural babies will be screened and Eisenmenger’s Syndrome will be eliminated in Yunnan.
China Cal receives $25,000 from Edwards Life Sciences Foundation.
The Edwards Life Sciences Foundation will be awarding a grant of $25000 to China Cal to start a program training Yunnan village doctors on using electronic stethoscopes to screen newborns for heart disease. Yunnan village doctors receive only 3 to 24 months of training after high school. Their training does not typically include routine screening of babies so it is difficult for village doctors to distinguish pathological from normal heart murmurs. We hope that through this training program, which involves transfer of electronically recorded murmurs to urban-based expert cardiologists or local software analysis of these murmurs, village doctors can drastically improve their evaluation of children with heart disease. Thank you Edwards Life Sciences for this generous grant. China Cal Partners with Global Giving. In order to diversify income sources and increase revenues to support its charitable programs, China Cal is partnering with Global Giving.( http://globalgiving.org/projects/save-kids-with-heart-disease). Each week, about 40,000 individuals visit Global Giving's website, offering increased exposure to our projects. Global
Giving's reputation gives donors and companies added assurance in donating to us. We have started with a campaign to save Li Gan, a four-year-old Yunnan child with complex congenital heart disease. We urge you to consider a donation at http://globalgiving.org/projects/save-kids-with-heart-disease. School Heart Screening. In 2008, we began our school heart-screening program. The program is described here: http://www.congenitalcardiologytoday.com/index_files/CCT-SEP11-INT.pdfWhy is screening important? In rural Yunnan, local village doctors are not trained to listen for heart murmurs in newborn infants and small children. As a result, some children with heart disease escape detection until they develop a condition called “Eisenmenger’s Syndrome,” when it is too late for a surgical cure. There are probably over 1000 children with this deadly condition in Yunnan province.
To prevent this tragedy, heart screening should be done both at birth and within the first year of life. China Cal is working with the Yunnan Province government to develop training programs for village doctors so that all rural babies will be screened before Eisenmenger’s Syndrome develops. In the meantime, we work through the departments of health and education in Yunnan
counties to arrange screenings for elementary and kindergarten children in their classrooms. At the start of each China Cal internship, cardiologists train volunteer interns and staff how to listen for heart murmurs in children. A licensed doctor supervises two to three intern
volunteers in each classroom. Volunteers listen for abnormal heart sounds and refer these to the supervising doctor for further examination. Children with abnormal heart murmurs are referred for a full
exam, including echocardiography by China Cal cardiologists. If heart disease is then found, they are referred for appropriate surgical treatment. China Cal staff work with families and charitable foundations to ensure that no child is denied treatment because of inability to pay. So far, this program has resulted in surgical cures for many poor Yunnan children.
Why screen in Xuanwei County? Xuanwei County has the worst indoor air pollution in China. The indoor air pollution here is due to burning fuels like coal and wood in open pit fires or poorly made stoves. The coal burned in Xuanwei homes is particularly toxic and results in high lung cancer rates and likely high embryonic cardiac mutation rates as well. We are therefore working with the Yunnan Province government to screen all schoolchildren in Xuanwei County and to help those found with heart disease. Xuanwei screening began on June 5 and continues now in September. We plan to return to Xuanwei in December.
China Cal Chinese Blog Now Going Strong. China Cal volunteer Fei Shu has created and started posting on our new Chinese blog. Check it out at http://blog.sina.com.cn/u/2755229981
Please Donate Now China Cal operates solely through the generosity and vision of donors, participants and YOU. Every donation helps tremendously and allows us to continue our efforts in saving lives, raising awareness about heart disease, and improving quality of life through our medical, research and education programs. In order to continue and improve our work, we must soon hire a cardiac nurse to help us with our clinical work. With your help, we can purchase better equipment and hire the staff we need. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Donors who give at least $150 can receive a free copy of our China Cal photo book shipped to them anywhere in the world. | | | |
