You may have heard about a disturbing incident that occurred late last night. An argument between two individuals on the University Park Campus ended with a shooting in which one of the individuals and three bystanders were injured. None of the individuals involved were USC students, faculty, or staff.

The victims are being treated at a local hospital. We hope they make a full and speedy recovery.

The incident occurred outside a student Halloween party at the campus center. Multiple officers from the Department of Public Safety were monitoring the area near the party. The officers witnessed the shooting and immediately apprehended two suspects as they fled the scene.

University policy requires that any student parties on campus be open only to guests with student IDs from USC or another university. The individuals involved were not admitted to the party at any time.

In light of this and other events, campus safety and security has been a major topic of discussion at the highest levels of my administration. I want to personally assure you that the university mobilized all its resources in responding to this incident, and worked closely with the Los Angeles Police
Department in ensuring our students' safety.

As part of our immediate response, TrojansAlert texts and emails were sent out notifying the campus community of the events as they unfolded. We are now carefully assessing and reviewing all of the university's policies regarding visitors and events held on campus.

While the risk of such an episode on campus is very low, it reminds all of us that we must look out for ourselves and be particularly vigilant about the personal safety of friends and guests at our social events. And, if something happens despite these precautions, please seek help immediately by calling the emergency number for the USC Department of Public Safety at（213）740-4321. This is an important moment for each of us to take the time to review the safety tips available on the USC website at scampus.usc.edu/safety-tips/ and emergencyprep.usc.edu/campus/what-you-can-do.html. We all play an important role in ensuring a safe campus.

Trained members of the USC Student Affairs are ready to assist students and families who have been affected by these incidents, offering counseling and support to anyone who desires that help. Although this incident did not involve USC students and was resolved quickly, it strikes at the heart of the Trojan Family. I understand the apprehensions and concerns of our campus community as we move forward. All of us have been shaken by serious incidents this year. Despite these events, or indeed because of them, we must continue to support each other as members of the Trojan Family.

Registration is open for November 13 Parents Council meeting

All parents are invited to attend the Parents Council meeting on Tuesday, November 13 at the Radisson Hotel（on Figueroa, across from campus）. The parent social starts at 5:30pm and the dinner meeting will begin at 6pm. Patrick Bailey, Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs will be the featured speaker. The topic is “Getting the Most Out of Your Children’s Education While at USC”. Registration is $25 until Monday, November 5. After November 5, registration is $30. Local Hosts Needed for Thanksgiving Match-Up Program by November 5

The USC Office of International Services is looking for host families for its annual Thanksgiving Match-Up program. This program gives USC international students the opportunity to celebrate the holiday by matching them up for a Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, November 22 with an American host family in or around Los Angeles. Host families and students will be notified of matches about one week before Thanksgiving Day. Parents Needed to Host a Trojan SCupper in February

The USC Alumni Association and Society 53 are planning to expand their successful dinner program to host students for dinner in the homes of USC parents and alumni. Now in its fifth year, this unique Trojan Family tradition brings students, alumni and parents together in a fun, relaxed environment.

Parents and alumni will host a dinner for 10-15 students at either their home or in a local restaurant within 25 miles of campus. As students register, the Alumni Association does their best to pair up students with hosts that best fit their interests, major and/or career goals. Free Parking and Airport Shuttle Service Offering for Thanksgiving Break

The USC Department of Public Safety and USC Transportation Services will offer free parking and free airport shuttle service for the Thanksgiving break. Take advantage of the GIFT program（Group Initiative For Theft-Prevention）to you. If your student plans to leave a vehicle parked on or near the USC campus during the holidays, the GIFT program can make your student’s holiday experience a little more enjoyable by providing peace of mind. Since 2005, the use of GIFT by students, faculty and staff has reduced vehicle related crimes on both campuses during the holiday break by 65%!

Online registration for free parking and airport shuttle service will be announced by email to students and in the Daily Trojan on Monday, November 5. The winter break “GIFT” will be announced on Monday, November 26, 2012.

Center for Women and Men offers Support Group for Women

The Center for Women and Men（CWM）runs a weekly drop-in Women’s Group. This support group is for women who have experienced gender-based violence, such as assault, harassment, stalking or abuse. The sessions will be supervised by a CWM counselor and will be safe and confidential. It’s a place to connect with other survivors, gain support and continue healing. Like all of their counseling services, this group is free and no appointments are necessary. The meetings will be held at 4pm on Thursdays at the Student Union, Suite 202. Join the Dean of the Roski School for Retrospective at LACMA on November 27

Starting at 7pm on Tuesday, November 27, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art（LACMA）will present a retrospective of Ken Price ’57, professor emeritus of the USC Roski School of Fine Arts. Join fellow Trojans for a special viewing of this 50-year retrospective of Price's sculptures. The reception will be held in the Wayne Foyer and feature remarks from Erica Muhl, dean of the USC Roski School of Fine Arts and Stephanie Barron, LACMA’s Senior Curator and Modern Art Department Head. Following the reception, guests will tour the exhibition in the Resnick Pavilion.

For nearly 15 years, Price taught at USC Roski, where he helped to advance the ceramics area of study. He achieved the rank of tenured professor in 1994 and was honored as professor emeritus in 2005. In 2011, he received the USC Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award. A pioneer in the field of ceramics, Price pushed the boundaries of working with clay well beyond traditionally assigned roles.
