China Institute Gallery's annual event celebrating artistic inspiration in the spirit of renowned calligraphy sage Wang Xizhi's famous gathering at Orchid Pavilion in Kuaiji(today's Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province). The Orchid Pavilion Gathering has been considered the epitome of a cultured and elegant life since 353 CE, please join us for an inspiring afternoon and let our exhibition Art in a Time of Chaos take you back to the time of Wang Xizhi and his literati friends.  

Willow Weilan Hai, Gallery Director and Chief Curator of Art in a Time of Chaos:Masterworks from Six Dynasties China, 3rd-6th Centuries will offer tours in Chinese and English on the subject Why Six Dynasties?

"Why the Seven Sages?"

The Seven Sages have been a recurring theme in Chinese art since the Six Dynasties period and have continued to inspire artists for generations. In this lecture, Willow Weilan Hai, Director of China Institute Gallery, and Chief Curator of Art in a Time of Chaos:Masterworks from Six Dynasties China, 3rd-6th Centuries will explore archaeological findings in artwork throughout history and decipher the significance of the Seven Sages as cultural symbols in Chinese art.

Once Upon a Time in China

Come see Once Upon a Time in China(1991), directed by Tsui Hark, and introduced by Raymond Tsang, Doctoral Candidate in Cinema Studies at NYU and specialist in martial arts studies. 

The final installment in our Film Art Set in Times of Chaos series, Once Upon a Time in China is a distinctive update of a renowned tale:the life of the great physician and martial artist Wong Fei Hung(1847-1924). Set in the latter years of Qing Dynasty(1644 to 1912), the film depicts the crime-ridden and semi-colonialized city of Guangdong.

This China Institute Center for Business Industry Updates program will focus on the Chinese Art Market, presented by Nick Wilson from China Guardian(HK)Auctions. China Guardian is China's oldest art-auction firm and one of the top leaders in the Chinese art auction market. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

In this special lecture, Hu Yanyan, President of China Guardian Auctions, the premier auction house that specializes in Chinese antiques and art, and a senior specialist in Chinese calligraphy and painting, will examine the Chinese masterworks from ancient, modern, and contemporary, to lead the appreciation of Chinese paintings from the form, brush work, significance and its collection value.
