A Brief Biography-------Sheng-Xing Ma
Sheng-Xing Ma, M.S., Ph.D., is a Professor and Director of Integrated Medicine Research Laboratories at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, University of California Los Angeles（UCLA）David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Ma graduated from the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou, China in 1996. He subsequently received a Master’s Degree in Integrated traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing in 1982. In 1987, He pursued Ph.D. training in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Iowa and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1991. From 1991 to 1995 he received postdoctoral training in the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Iowa. Dr. Ma was recruited to UCLA as an Assistant Professor in 1996, and he received a promotion to Associate Professor in 2003 and Professor in 2008 in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Dr. Ma has been engaged in the studies of cardiovascular effects induced by exogenous and endogenous nitric oxide（NO）, and the regulation of neuronal NO synthase expression for the past 20 years. With extensive experience in the studies and practices of traditional Chinese medicine（TCM）and Western medicine, he has developed and conducted research projects on complementary and alternative medicine（CAM）combining cellular/molecular activities with functions/diseases. His research has been continuously supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health（NIH）, the American Heart Association（AHA）, and the American Diabetes Association（ADA）for 19 years. He has successfully received and directed 13 research grants as principal investigator（PI）. These extramural grants include two NIH RO1s, one NIH Independent Scientist Award（KO2）, three NIH R21s, one NIH RO3, two AHA Grain-in-Aids, and two ADA Research Awards.
The results from his research group have demonstrated that nitric oxide mediates acupuncture-induced cardiovascular and analgesic effects through a novel pathway, the dorsal medullar-thalamic tract, differing from the previous discovery of opiod peptide-mediated acupuncture effects. A series of his studies have demonstrated that impairments of NO synthesis/release in the pathways contribute to physiological regulations and pathological mechanisms of hypertension, obesity, and pain syndromes. Another novel discovery is that NO is an important endogenous meridian chemical, and that nonenzymatic NO production and neuronal NOergic system contribute to NO level changes in acupoints and meridians associated with meridian practices and diseases. He has developed a painless, non-invasive device to collect NO from skin surfaces of acupoints and meridians for quantitatively studying meridian chemicals during physiological changes and various diseases in human. The technology will allow us to explore the mechanisms and therapeutic effects of meridian related therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, meditation/Qi Gong, and herbal treatments.
Dr. Ma has served as a reviewer for a wide range of medical and neuroscience journals, as well as for a study section ad hoc reviewer in the National Institutes of Health Study Section, U.S.A. and National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has published 110 peer-reviewed research articles and meeting abstracts, 3 book chapters, and received one United States Patent（Serial No：US 7,092,752 B2）. From 2000 to present, he has been invited to present more than 50 lectures and keynote presentations at national/international conferences, universities, NIH, associations, and research centers. He has served as a member of the Editorial Board of “Evidence-based CAM,” “Acupuncture Research,” “Chinese Medicine,” and “Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine.” In addition, he has reviewed many manuscripts in a wide range of medical and CAM journals. Since 2004, he was invited to serve as a Special Foreign Scientist and Visiting Professor in the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine issued by the Ministry of Education in China. He has served as number of the American Physiological Society, the Society for Neuroscience, and the American Heart Association, and also served as a Vice Chair of the Cardiovascular Committee, World Federation of Chinese Medical Societies.
1991年获美国依阿华大学药学院药理学专业博士学位，随后在美国依阿华大学药学院心血管研究中心从事博士后研究。现任美国加州大学洛杉矶分校（UCLA）医学院教授，海港医学研究中心首席科学家。目前独立主持四项美国国立卫生院资助的科研项目，持有美国发明专利两项。
叶向东，现任中国驻洛杉矶总领馆科技参赞。高级工程师，哲学博士。曾任中国驻荷兰大使馆科技处一等秘书、中国驻丹麦王国大使馆科技参赞。长期从事科技管理和科技外交工作。近年来主要研究兴趣和方向：文明转型与创新范式转型、新科技革命的基本内涵与特征、创新范式转型与中国传统文化、科学不确定性问题、科技伦理及农业科技创新的国际比较研究等。

Douglas J. Malewicki, MS
Doug Malewicki's experience encompasses structural, dynamic, performance and stress analysis positions for assorted major aerospace companies. His past positions include; Senior Flight Test Engineer at Cessna Aircraft, Chief Design Engineer at Centuri Engineering, Manager of Advanced R&D at L.M. Cox Manufacturing and Senior Technical Specialist in Advanced Composites Manufacturing at Northrop B-2 Stealth Bomber Division. His company AeroVisions, Inc. was founded in 1974 and incorporated in 1980 to develop, promote and commercialize his numerous inventions. AeroVisions is a DARPA approved contractor. Doug has patents in the fields of aviation, advanced transportation, medicine, toys and robotics. In the early 1980s he set two official Guinness World Records for achieving over 150 miles per gallon fuel efficiency on cross-country runs at freeway speeds driving his California Commuter. His most recent technical paper entitled 'Silicon is about to Change the World -- AGAIN!' was published in the IEEE international Proceedings in November 2009. Doug received his MS in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Stanford University and a BS High Honors in the same field at the University of Illinois.
GREGORY T. SMEDLEY, Ph.D.
Greg Smedley received his Ph.D. from Caltech. He is a renowned researcher, educator, and industry leader with a diverse career that spans the power electronics industry, medical device industry, Research and education at Caltech, and Space exploration at JPL. He is a founder and the CEO of One-Cycle Control, Inc.
Dr. G. Smedley is a world-class technologist with a passion for paradigm-shifting technology across a broad spectrum of fields and a vision for potential and opportunity. Dr. Smedley has presented invited talks throughout the world and he has won many major government awards from agencies that include：DOE, DOD, CEC, NASA, and NIH. At One-Cycle Control, Dr. G. Smedley is devoted to delivering advanced power electronics for renewable energy power generation, energy storage, advanced transportation, smart grid control, hybrid-power systems, mobile power, and aerospace power. His team has developed a family of high efficiency, high density, and high power quality three-phase products that include three-phase 380Vdc data center power, active power filter, STATCON, bidirectional PFC AC/DC converter, energy storage, UPS inverter, grid tied inverter, motor drive inverter, etc. Dr. Smedley’s team is the recipient of 2010 Army Achievement Award presented in the Pentagon May 24th, 2010 that honors the best Army SBIR projects.
Dr. G. Smedley is interested in tackling global-scale problems in sustainable transportation, sustainable energy, electric grids, and low-cost access to space.
Yi Feng
Yi Feng obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science, preceding an M.S. in Public
Policy Analysis, all at The University of Rochester, New York, following his
undergraduate and graduate work in China with an MA degree in English culminating in
a thesis on Vladimir Nabokov’s English novels. His areas of concentration included
international political economy, public policy analysis, and quantitative methodology. He
is now Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Claremont Graduate
University, where he has been on the faculty of politics and policy since 1995 and holds
the Luther Lee Jr. Memorial Chair in Government. Prior to his current administrative
position, he has also been Chair of the Department of Politics and Policy, Associate Dean
and Dean of the School of Politics and Economics of Claremont Graduate University. His
professional service includes the General Program Chair, organizing the International
Studies Association Annual Conference（Hawaii, 2004-05）and Editor of International
Interactions, a premier journal in international studies（2001-2005）.
Yi Feng’s research focuses on political and economic development. He has published
extensively on topics such as economic growth, investment, human capital, international
trade, demographic transition, and political regime transitions in both economics and
political science peer-reviewed journals including European Journal of Political
Economy, Journal of Economic Organization and Behavior, Journal of Economic
Dynamics and Control, Urban Studies, British Journal of Political Science, International
Studies Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Interactions and Journal
of Peace Research. His works on regional development deal with political and economic
issues in Latin America, Pacific Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. He has also published on
China’s financial markets, labor and human capital, economic growth, state enterprises,
foreign direct investment, and trade policy. His book, Democracy, Governance and
Economic Performance：Theory and Evidence（MIT, 2003, 2005）has been cited as
“notable for its broad scope, its thorough grounding in empirical evidence and for the
insights it offers into complex social processes. This is interdisciplinary research at its
best”（Eirik G. Furubotn 2003）.
The classes he taught include International Political Economy, International Relations,
Political Economy of Regional Integration and Globalization, Public Policy Research,
Political Economy of Pacific Asia, Quantitative Research Methods, and Computer
Applications for Data Analysis.
An avid marathon runner（with a PR of 3:13:20 at the Boston Marathon, 2008）and a
certified rescue diver, he sublimates through running on mountain trails and diving in the
Pacific Ocean.
He and his wife live in Claremont, California.
