Dear Colleague:
The Ohio State Graduate Program in Mathematics is inviting applications to both its MMS and PhD degree programs. We are expecting to recruit a total of about 30 students for Autumn 2011. Below a few highlights that your graduating undergraduate majors and Masters students may be interested in.
Application Fee for both mathematics graduate degree programs is only five dollars($5).
All students admitted to either the MMS or the PhD program are fully supported for as long as they pursue and progress towards their degrees.
The Master of Mathematical Sciences (MMS) is a new degree program divided into specialization tracks. We plan to recruit about 6 students for each track per year. We currently offer the following two specialization tracks:
Mathematical Biology:
This degree track is co-sponsored by the NSF Mathematical Biosciences Institute at OSU. Research and thesis projects are in collaboration, among others, with the OSU departments of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology, Molecular Genetics, and Microbiology, as well as the OSU Medical Center. Mathematics for Educators:
This degree track serves students with interest in the teaching and, more broadly, the communication of mathematics. The curriculum emphasizes a thorough background in core areas of mathematics as well as courses specially designed in collaboration with the OSU Department of Education and Human Ecology. We plan to introduce additional specializations in Computational Sciences (2012) and Financial Mathematics (2013).
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): We expect to admit 16-19 students to our PhD-program. We had several faculty hires as well as implemented curricular changes which significantly strengthened and invigorated our PhD-program. 由愛默蕾大學中文組主辦，俄文與東亞語言文化系、東亞研究學門、中文書法俱樂部、愛默蕾大學及亞特蘭大孔子學院贊助的第五屆「中文演講比賽」，日前在該校White Hall大廳舉行。比賽內容有中、高級演講及初、高級的「中文搶答」，初級話劇和文藝方面之比賽，當天有200餘名師生出席。
俄文與東亞語言文化系主任阿克寧（Juliette Apkrian）開場時表示，「演講」是幫助人與人之間的溝通與說服、並能表達思想、猜謎、感受、詩意與靈魂。她說學生的好成績是老師珍貴的成果。此項活動策畫人何婉麗博士表示，特別感謝中文組的七位教授蔡蓉、李紅、李煜、陳健、童自樟、劉織、鄭惠麗，他們全心全力的教導一年級至四年級學生。何婉麗說，希望藉由演講比賽，提高學生學習中文的興趣與信心。
在分數極為接近的競賽下，四年級美裔學生史今博(Steven Goldberg)以「歡笑是人與人之間溝通的靈丹妙藥」為題榮獲高級組演講第一名。第二名為泰裔學生Pattamasaevi Pongsak，他以「幸福是什麼」為題訴說在努力耕耘的工作與事業中，同時也達成了幫助別人的慈善效應，就是最幸福的。中級組第一名Evan Mah的演講「李友在那裡」，以說故事方式來表達家庭生活點滴。第二名卡爾弗特(Emily Calvert)，她將學中文的甘苦事與大家分享，她提到學習「鳥」與「尿」時的一些糗事及如何將中文四個聲調發音準確是最具高難度的。
初級話劇第一名得獎的劇目是「相親(Match Making)」，第二名有兩名:「雙重約會(Double Dating)」及「她是誰(Who is She)」。才藝比賽由綵帶舞贏得第一名，國語歌曲「月亮代表我的心」獲第二名。主持人孔成生(Jack Kelleher)、趙麗元(Olivia Zhao)分別以流暢的中英雙語串聯全場，美裔的孔成生曾參加過孔子學院舉辦的中國之旅學習中文活動，他不但說起中文正腔圓而且機智幽默 |

馬里蘭大學孔子學院為慶祝美國孔子學院成立六周年，17日將邀請中國著名外交家吳建民、施燕華夫婦到該校主持專題講座，暢談中美關係，主辦單位歡迎各界參加討論。
吳建民現任全國政協外事委員會副主任、外交學院院長，國際展覽局主席。他先後擔任駐荷、瑞、法國大使。回國後，吳建民擔任中國外交學院院長。2003年12月，他當選為國際展覽局主席，是第一位中國人、第一位亞洲人、第一位來自發展中國家的人士擔任這一重要職務。
施燕華則是中國翻譯協會常務副會長，外交部外語專家，曾任中國駐盧森堡大使，1998年至2003年任中國駐法國使館公使銜參贊。

2010年中國漢辦美國本土漢語教師教材培訓大會暨第18屆新英格蘭地區中文教師研討會本月13、14日在波士頓文藝復興特許學校舉行，200多名來自新英格蘭地區各級公私立學校及僑教的教師匯聚一堂，藉兩整日的講座和活動，交流觀摩，認識相關政策與發展趨勢，探索獲取資源和協助的訊息。該活動由中國漢辦孔子學院總部主辦，麻州大學孔子學院、麻大中文項目中心，及文藝復與特許學校協辦。波士頓公立學校外語部主任林遊嵐在開幕典禮上指出，全美外語組織近日強力在國會推動「美國中小學校法案」，希望加強全美國際教育。
今年有2690萬元經費的外語協助項目（FLAP），其中56-58%的經費用在中文項目，可見中文的重要性和增長情形。漢辦孔子學院總部教材資源開發處主任彭增安帶來有配套資源的七套中文教材，共1500冊，贈送給與會教師。他表示，漢辦近年致力中文教材開發和翻譯工作，並鼓勵海外教師開發和分享教學軟體。2006年聯邦政府推出「國家安全語言計畫」後，被認定與美國國家安全及經濟利益有密切關係的中文，成為重要的外語語種。目前麻州開設中文課程的學校數，僅次於加州，是全美第二。
FLAP中文項目顧問Mary Cazabon表示，根據美國應用語言中心於1987-2008年間所做的研究調查，全美約有57%的公立學校、43%的私立學校有中文課程。2004-2006年之間，開設中文課程的成長率高達200%。她指出各校缺乏全國性的相關協調、教材不足、缺乏能講流利中文教師等是現實挑戰。
在胡萬里主持的首場研討會中，麻州教育廳長Paul Reville、麻州中小學教育廳語言部主任Esta Montano，文藝復興特許學校學監Roger Harris、該校校長Jillian Nesgos、Mary Cazabon等擔任主講人，分別回答主持人和觀眾提問，表達支持中文教學發展的看法與態度。 兩日17場有關中文教學資源與應用的講座和研習會主講人有葉金惠、孫翼、陳穎、穆谷青、林金玲、包志勇、鄭詠雪、朱偉憶、徐進輝、狄國偉、李娜、韓穎、楊明、秦敏、王莉、于興、孫百鳳、陳慕蓮、劉艷芬、許建紅、Peter Gilmartin、Renee Covalucci等人。

「紐約郵報」引用最新研究報告說，17%美國人承認曾在工作場所翻雲覆雨，28%的人曾在公園交歡。
委託進行這項調查的Sensis保險套公司主管葛利克說，可能被別人撞破帶來的緊張刺激有增添興味作用。 他說，違反禁忌帶來的緊張刺激使他們更加情慾高漲，能夠避免被逮到更使他們志得意滿。
研究結果發現有些美國人不只喜歡在辦公室「辦事」，有3%的人也宣稱他們曾在九霄雲外的飛機上雲雨。
葛利克說：「一班飛機平均有200名乘客，因此這種事情大約每兩班飛機就發生一件。如果你經常搭機，很可能碰到這種情況。」
研究結果發現，除了家裡之外，美國人最喜歡在汽車後座性愛，有69%承認製造車震。
有8%曾在學校交媾，4%在火車或巴士發洩過情慾，3%甚至曾在教堂或其他宗教場所胡作非為！
Sensis總裁湯普森說，尋求用一些危險和刺激為性生活和關係增添興味的美國人比以前多得多。
研究結果也發現令人不安的現象：有89%的人表示他們曾不用保險套進行不安全的性愛。49%的人宣稱他們採用其他避孕方式，不怕懷孕；38%覺得保險套會影響性趣；還有14%是因為根本沒人提到要用保險套，所以就沒用。
