"Civic Engagement for a New Generation: Why Get Involved? Why Stay Involved?"
Come and meet the current and future leaders of the community and hear the insights of people who work hard to improve all of our lives at APEX’s 4th Annual Community Leaders Reception. This year’s theme “Civic Engagement for a New Generation: Why Get Involved? Why Stay Involved?” was inspired by our desire to discuss why it is important to energize more Asian Pacific Americans to take an active interest in the issues and concerns facing the community and the nation.
We will be discussing ways that people can get involved, such as through political participation and civic volunteerism. We will also discuss why getting involved is not only important for a democratic society and for the community's welfare, but also important for personal development, such as through the development of leadership skills and contacts.

1. XX is not CSA member but one of our UPDATE readers.
2. XX 作为一名读者，投上来稿也是很正常的。我们每周都会收到数以百计类似的电子邮件。对于很多反馈稿件，我们在过去20年中都是采取正面的态度接受的。
对于她在3年多之前的这封来件，即使用现在的“读者来稿”审件条件，我们也有可能刊登。一般的来说，只要是非政治和非牟利的来稿，我们都以海纳百川的宽容来接受。
世无圣人，孰能无过。 人在海外，团结和谐、协力合作似乎比争斗比狠更合适。
有缺点可以指正，有意见尽管提出，但宜以“治病救人”的友善态度，可能效果会更好一些。"一棍子打死"的做法对谁都没有任何好处。谁能担保我们自己也会终身无过呢？
美国华裔教授学者Scholars Net 从最初的区区几个人到今天之所以能有壹万多位来自全球的高层次专家学者愿意和我们站在一起，其中一个重要的原因也可能是我们始终本着“团结一切可以团结的力量”的宗旨吧。

|
海外华文教育的课程选择众多。所有的课程都面临一个共同的问题，每星期只有风雨无阻的两个小时教学，平时又缺乏语言环境。教学方法是听、说、读、写一起学，识字速度缓慢。那么多的单个生字，学生往往学了前面忘记后面的。另外所有生字全部是零散学的，没有一个提纲携领，将所有生字串起来的工具（即使老师用了不同的归类法来加强识记能力，仍然有限）。识字量久久达不到自主阅读的要求。由于学生自主阅读能力差，更是影响了通过反复阅读加强巩固所学生字的目的，结果忘得很快。这个恶性循环是目前影响海外华文教育教学效果的关键。中文学校教师梦寐以求的是能够使学生提前识字、大量识字。有了这个基础，其它中文学习的教学目标才能顺利实现。
暨南大学华文学院编写的《中文》经过十多年的磨练，新的版本更加完善。但是也同样存在这个问题。由于诸多原因，许多采用《中文》教程的中文学校不得不将原一学期一册的计划进度改为一学年一册。这样一来，拖的时间更长，识字量增长速度更慢。又没有有效的复习工具所以学前面忘右面的问题同样严重。
希林中文学校于2006年开始与国内合作开始了试验课程，要想达到提前识字、大量识字的目标，快速识字法是一个有效办法。但是必须要有一套适合美国孩子情况的新教程。
积希林中文学校二十多年在美国进行中文教学的经验以及对《中文》这套教程的深切了解，开发了一套新的教程。该教程在《中文》的基础课程之上，将《中文》生字表编成朗朗上口的儿童韵语，利用游戏、字卡和小书童等教学辅助工具使学生像背诗一样将生字表背诵下来并记忆在心。学生在游戏、娱乐中达到了快速、突击识字的目的。在这个阶段进行到一定程度时进入正常《中文》教学。
· 学生先将中文一到四册生字表韵文（800字）像字典一样熟记在心，随时脑子里可以按韵文查找。复习时将韵文诵读一遍，生字即可回忆起来了。
· 进入《中文》课本教学后按照自主阅读教学法学生很快掌握自主阅读能力，并学习写字及其他语法点。由于前四册课本80%教学内容都在识字，所以在完成生字韵文学习后再学习《中文》进展非常快。
· 有了800字的中文识字基础和自主阅读能力，学生有了阅读更多材料的基础，赢得了中文学习的自信心。
希林亚裔社区中心中文学校2009年秋季（九月）开始，正式在周末中文学校和每日课后班开设试验班，教学效果都非常显著。目前:
· 6-8岁课后班的学生（每周四天，每天45分钟中文课）已经掌握了一到四册的800字韵文，500字左右的书写，现在已经进入了自主阅读和语法学习阶段。这些学生能够自主阅读第五册以后课本的课文。由于具有一定的识字量，已经开始学习写小短文。
· 5-7岁周末班的学生由于全年仅有64个课时，只能重点在学习生字表韵文，并将课本中的课文作为迁移教学的文章做一些初步阅读基础训练和做一些练习册的练习题。
· 由于经常诵读韵文，学生中文口语意识增强。又由于三锐识字法中迁移教学的训练，学生具有随时认字的兴趣和习惯，对成篇生字的文章不惧怕，主动挑选认识的字读并将关联的韵文脱口而出。
· 学生学习中文自信心明显增强。
